I picked up 2 Savage Axis rifles while on clearance at Walmart. Both are in .308. I'm thinking I need to make one of them a 7-08 or a .260. Here is the company I was thinking about mostly because of price. I live in Iowa and it would be a stroke of luck to get to Texas to pig hunt or out west to muley deer hunt. So which one, the 7-08 or the .260. The second one I will keep in .308. kwg https://www.eabco.net/Shaw-Barrel-fits-Savage-10110-and-Axis-7-08-Rem-195-Blue-FC_p_15559.htmlIf you don't reload, I suggest the 7mm-08 is a much better choice due to the variety and availability of factory ammo. If you reload it is a toss-up.but a 7mm-08 would probably be easier to sell should you choose to do so. Someone suggested a 6.5CM. If you don't handload, this would be my choice. Way more factory ammo options and better availability than the others. And cheaper plinking ammo.

No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.
A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.

Nothing that you are going to hunt is going to tell the difference between a 7mm-08 and a .308. I changed an early Ruger Mk ll .308 into a 7mm-08 and now I pay lots more for factory ammunition. Here is another watch out. A 308 and a 7mm-08 look so much alike that mixing up ammo just by looking at them can be a problem. A .308 wouldn’t chamber in my 7mm-08 thank goodness, but I’d bet that a 7mm-08 would go in a .308. I had both and the reason I sold off the .308.
My other auto is a .45

Honesty I can't imagine putting much money into an Axis. I'd just look for one in a chambering you want and sell one of the ones you have. I would agree.

Wait a minute, what better cartridge to rebarrel a Savage (any Savage) to than the 250-3000? One of the best deer cartridges ever. If you don't reload, sell the 308 and buy a good reloading manual and JB's dvd. then look at various reloading kits. you will be happy hunter the rest of your days.

I don't give a flyingfuck if they shoot bughole groups. This is close to the fuggliest rifle ever conceived, and I won't spend a nickel for one.

Go with a 250ai and push a 80ttsx at 3500+fps. Puts deer down like lightning and then you have two rifles no where near each other on the weight an speed scale.

It’s funny how some have to spew negativity about someone else’s choices without any knowledge about that person’s situation/ preferences. My mother always said if you don’t have anything good/constructive to say then keep you thoughts to yourself (several could benefit from that) and besides the OP asked caliber choice not what you think about his choice of rifles - although I guess reading comprehension is not a requirement of this forum.
I agree with the other constructive suggestions/opinions that have been made on here - not a lot of difference between the three. I’m a big .260 fan but it does have some drawbacks. Others have mentioned .243/6 Creedmor and .338 Federal/.358 Which would give you a little more diversity or keep the big caliber .308 for the availability of components alone.
Good luck with your project! PennDog

Some Walmart’s have the Axis as low as $125, just under $200 is fairly common. They have a 270 for $185 locally, told a buddy. Yeah, you get to do the Walmart dance.
I bought an Axis in 22-250 6 months ago, $198. A little trigger work, good scope, it came prairie dogging earlier this summer.
For what they are, more than capable to put a deer on the buck pole. I’ve never been a big Savage fan, but they work.

I would box one up and put it on the shelf/in the safe............. take it out when you have a grandson or something................ either cartridge will do what the other will.
