Everything I read said Ronnie had a real temper when he was drunk and loved to get into a fist fight. I watched a documentary that a band member said he beat up someone who happened to be a bail bondsman that in turn hired someone to kill him. The dude he hired was a friend of Ronnie and told him. That didn't end well.
Faith and love of others knows no mileage nor bounds. That's simply the way it is. dogzapper

I saw them in 76 or 77 in Denver. I was 13 or 14 at the time. They played the old Mile High Stadium. Less than a year later the plane crash happened. The group preforming as Skynyrd today don't hold a candle to the original band. Matter of fact only one or two members of the band today were with them back in the day and neither of them were the top guys. Rossington and Collins aren't part of it and Ed King is dead. With Ronnie Van Zandt, Stevie Gains and Cassie Gains gone you lose a big part of what made them special and that is hard to duplicate.

Had a good arm on him too. Was considered an excellent baseball player in school.
He beat the hell out of Billy Powell a couple of good times for not being in time. 😃
They were okay as a rock band and a couple of their tunes will always be what we call "iconic," but they were not incredible musicians. Props for a certain amount of originality, but the original Allman Brothers will always overshadow them.
If you want to kill a couple of hours, look at some of the Youtube videos about the band, the plane crash, and the aftermath. You'll probably conclude that Gary Rossington is a liar and a creep of great magnitude.
I ran into Johnny VanZant in a fast food place in Jax once back in about 1979. Seemed like a pretty down to earth regular guy.
