Had a few questions hoping someone can offer input:
1. Is this stock original and walnut? 2. Is the round counter brass or aluminum? 3. What is the X for on the reciever under savage 99? 4. What is the approximate value as is? 5. Looks to be a 1960 based on the serial number, was that the first year for tang safety and is it considered pre-mil?
1. looks original 2. looks like non-brass (aluminum, pot metal or whatever) 3. probably an inspectors mark 4. don't know. someone else will have to answer this. 5. a partial serial number would help. The post one million rifles had the tang safety.

Premil 99's are those with serial numbers under 1 million, so yours is an early postmil. Nice looking gun.
Oh, and if you open the bolt you should be able to see the rotor, the cartridge counter is stamped on the edge of the rotor so whatever metal that is, is the cartridge counter numbers. 1960 is the first year for mass production of tang safety 99's (there were a couple prototypes done earlier).
Does your barrel say Chicopee Falls on it, or Westfield, MA?

Looking at the picture of the tang that is about the best grain you could ever have to discourage a tang crack because the force of the recoil goes directly against the grain.
If any of you are an old ball player like myself, I mean old enough to remember wood bats, you always were taught to hold the trademark on the bat up or down so that you would strike the ball against the grain of the bat and not with it. Also, the fewer the grains, the stronger the wood of the bat or of the stock. When you want to split a piece of firewood you strike it with the splitter along the grain. You don't lay the block of firewood on it's side and pound on it with a mall expecting it to split.
All that being said, I have seen some nasty tang cracks directly against the grain. But more often when the grain of the wood follows the direction of the force of the recoil. It's a tiny detail when looking at at 99, but a good tip nevertheless.

Barrels are the same quality, as far as we know. It's just that they moved the factory from Chicopee Falls to Westfield at the end of 1959. So you have a leftover barrel from Chicopee Falls. It's just a data point for us to know how often they show up on early Westfield guns. Each piece of data we get helps answer questions for others down the road. Appreciate it.

Yes, you dont attach it. Go to an image hosting site and load the pic there, then paste the BBC into your post.
If you use imgur then do an edit ( crop or change pixel size) you may get. 1? Added to your BBC code. Save the edited pic to your PC and re upload it and then use the new BBC code and paste in your post.

Yes that was me.....thanks for the info....I am a lefty so wanted the tang safety and wanted it to be early and in 300 savage..... seller says its a brass rotor even though it doesnt look like it to me in the pics.....stocks a bit rough may have it fixed up maybe not.....excited for my first 99 nonetheless!
