Issues with at least 4 Winchester M70 bolt handles just in this thread. Wouldn’t trust one in the field.
LMAO... Well, then, you've obviously stayed light-years away from any M700 Rem.... Just a tip - all rifles are a form of machine.....and all machines can, at some point, fail for some reason.. Ergo, it's always wise to bring a backup rifle on a decent hunt.. Or - to prevent all potentials - stay home and have a sandwich..

The time to fix the bolt handle is before it comes loose. One or two small tig beads on the junction between the bolt body and handle will prevent future problems.

I spent about 13 years doing warranty work for Winchester and Remington. I saw three or four from each manufacturer which had bolt handles which had come adrift. In every case, the problem was a poor fit of the handle to the body; this combined with too little brazing material. Often the Winchester bolt is described as having the handle splined and brazed onto the bolt body. This is not the case. The handle is brazed onto a knurled tenon at the rear of the bolt body. Usually, the fit is pretty good and the brazing is well done but, occasionally, neither is the case. GD

Of course we are talking post 64 model 70's. When talking about pre 64's, and Ruger 77's IIRC, the bolt body and handle are not separate parts but are actually just one part. In pre 64's the bolt handle and bolt body are actually the same piece milled from a large billet of steel. The Ruger is cast as the same piece. I believe there are others that used to construct their bolts and handle as one, but they were all older construction. I know of no modern gun except Ruger where this is true. Of course my memory is not as good as it used to be, as I get older, and it used to suck. Aren't Howas (and I would assume Wby Vanguards) machined from a single solid billet?
