I have an original win sling on my m54. its been there for.....what? 80+ years? its been laced thru the sling hardware the whole time and over time, its created the famous crease where it curves around the hardware. is there any hope for it? can I salvage the effects of time? its not broken, just creased to a point where im afraid to use it. anything I can do?

I’ve had similar slings. I soaked them in neatsfoot oil and been pleased with the results. It won’t hurt, that’s for sure. Good luck.

I’d soak it as long as it continues to soak up the oil. Once it’s completely saturated you can try to work those creases out. Probably overnight, at least.

I kept hosing mine down with Balistol and it worked well. The neatsfoot is probably a better way though.

Pick your favorite leather solution:
Beeswax, easygoing, mink oil, lanolin.
Apply liberally and hope.
There comes a point where the leather is gone too far.
But leather is leather.
People can recreate that pa let and transfer the hardware...

Check with Justin at pre64win.com, these old Winchesters are too damn valuable to carry with rotted or weak leather, you cant trust that chit on a hunt anyway, I've bought two nice factory leather slings from him, a one inch for a standard rifle, and an inch and a quarter for a 375 H&H Magnum.

Are you sure that you’re trying to save an original Winchester sling? M54 slings were not laced.
