I tried calling Alaska Bullet Works in Juneau today at the internet listed number, 907-789-3834 and got and out of service recording. A call to information resulted in the same number. I have been buying his wonderful Kodiak Super Bonded 45-70 bullets for about 20 years and consider his heavy jacketed 350 and 405 grain version the best there is for busting big bears up close with a 45-70. In the last couple of months I bought some 350"s from him and 150 of his 250's for the .348 Ack. Imp. I am getting made up.
I sincerely hope old Karl is ok and just taking a break. If any one knows any thing I don't I would appreciate you contacting me with info.

I was hoping that was not the reason the phone was not working, but I did find his obituary in the Juneau Empire. I pray God carries his family this tough time. Hard to have a proper memorial service with the virus restrictions, so they have scheduled a memorial service for this summer..
Karl was old school Alaskan, call him and place your order and he sent you the bullets and a bill and the buyer sent him a check. I had many interesting conversations with him about bullets and he told me in our last talk a month ago that he was not sure how long he would be able to keep making bullets. I asked if any one would take it over when he retired and he said he had no one he knew off as every one with any interest had died.
I think Karl Mielke was in his mid 80's and he had good bullet info and thoughts to share. He said he used a 405 grain Kodiak in his 45-70 and did not feel his heavy jacketed version was needed, but that was what everyone wanted, so he quit making the regular jacket thickness. He also said most of the guides he spoke with that packed a 45-70 wanted the 405 grain weight with a heavy jacket.
So, I have a small supply of his bullets for my .356 Winchester, .348 Winchester and 45-70. I wish I had more, but doubt I will see them for sale again. I really like the thought of hunting in Alaska with bullets made by an Alaskan. Woe is me......
RIP Karl F. Mielke, by all accounts you lived a good life. Well done sir!
