I much prefer ceramic to soft body armor.

I don't know anybody stick with soft body armor if they have the choice these days. The ceramic stuff is getting lighter and lighter and it allows air to flow more better.

Kind of a bitch to conceal.

If you can find expired armor buy it. It will stop bullets.

Correct.

Think pistols and shotguns.

If you do get hit you probably won't be fighting much longer anyway.

Mike....I’m certain you would do more than fine...Rounds coming in on you. You’d be cat like in seconds, while I’m saying cover fire, please, so I can get to my feet. Grins

Who doesn't want more gear??

If you want it, can afford it and are staying mostly immobile while wearing it...get III+ full coated or IV ceramic hybrid.

Lesser ratings will protect against most rounds, offer a bit more mobility, but if the shooter is using a .556, 7.62 and larger rifle calibers...

Most vehicles and most abodes are often not effective in preventing pass through of projectiles. Your mindset and mmv.

Soft armor will stop pistol rounds....except 5.7x28....if you're going to be checking noises in the night ceramic plates are the way to go.....

I did'd a lot of work with kevlar in the 70's into the 90's sails, ropes, boat building, vests .....a expired vest is better than no vest....a used vest brakes down the strands of fiber by bending more it bent use the more the fibers get weaker it takes 10'000's of flexing the fibers to loose any strength....not to where it wouldn't stop a bullet its rated for.....
Liability is one reason for a expiration date second manufacture just doest know how it was used or stored.....at 160 F kevlar can loose 10-20% of its strength at 260 F up to 50%....

If you feel the need for a vest for everyday use get one rated for knives and also minimum 44 mag. its not going to completely stop a 5.56 or 7.62x39 SP but might save your life any AP your dead or wounded for sure....get steel or ceramic plate ups the ratings and weight....

A vest will not help any one unless they have a groin protector if you shoot like Clint Smith...........

Like the Greeks and Spartan armor, the groin was the weak spot.

I have level 3 steel plates, looking at going to level 4 ceramic. Level 3 will stop an ar15 or ak47/74 round. Well assuming it hits the plate.

The only AP rounds around in civilian volume are 30-06 wwII surplus and 50 BMG. Not many folks will be rolling pulled 30 cal AP surplus in their ar10, but there are a few reloaders that do. With a 50 BMG AP you’re pretty much fugged with any armor short of a tank.

Storman Norman,

You'll need to move up to AR550 plate if you're expecting a shootout with a bogie carrying 50 ap.

Philosophical, right there.

Back in the Jurassic period [1980-1990] we were issued for testing IBAs at supposed level 4 capability that was protective from neck to groin. 36 lbs before you added rifle, ammo etc. We were observed and timed outdoors and in the shooting house for performance evaluation by Sandia Nat'l. Labs. in 100*+ temps. The conclusion was that you could wear an IBA or an SCBA and fight, not both. Our mission required the SCBA as a probable option so it was back to soft armor.

I cannot relate to how tough it must have been for the warriors at the beginning of the GWOT. MOPP Gear, +IBAs in Iraq and Asscrackistan in the summer.

Even with ar550, I would imagine a hit from a 50 would take you out of the fight. 650 grains at 2900 FPS carry’s a whole lotta energy. The non AP 800 gr would probably sting a bit too. Never bring an ar15 to a 50 BMG fight laugh

I think that might hurt.
That reminds me of a volunteer who tested that theory. Begins at 3:00.

That guy's a veterinarian?? I've seen him in Vet Ranch videos (I think that's the name), but always assumed he was a vet tech.

He's a veterinarian and avid gun collector.
I think he has 3 channels.
Checked his stats on this channel and there's nearly a billion and a half views. It's fun to watch him destroy fun targets. His pick up truck was one of those.
He shot it with a tank. LOL!

Pros:. Excellent protection from any street mob.
Commands respect.
Turns heads.
Your son would be the envy of the school.
What girl would turn down a date with these "wheels."

Cons:
Really bad gas mileage.
