I finally got to my cow elk hunt I booked last year! Right at dark, last Thursday, about 100yds up on a sidehill. 300WM, 175 LRX, high lung shot ( I wanted to see how well the LRX design opened up w/o hitting big bone). Death run 30yds downhill. Fat young cow.
No pics as was right at dark, but an adult cow, seen one, seen all, and I'm "nothing to look at"! ha anyhow, I'm going back to the 30-06 for awhile, the 130 and 150 TTSX are 'calling my name"! Selling the 300WM.

Those are the best eatin elk. I've been using a 30/06 for 40 years----You'll be fine with it.

Hey scotty, I realized I just don't hunt/shoot past 300yds anymore, more like 100-150! ha I am going to see if I can wring out this Mark X 30-06 with the 130 & 150 TTSX. That 175 LRX opened just fine, made a quarter sized entrance hole, and a 50 cent piece sized exit hole, lungs tore up bad. I have a bill that needs paying anyhow, and I may as well use the sale of this rifle to pay it. Its a sweetheart rifle for sure, just don't feel I want to use it anymore. I'm a gun looney, what can I say?

I have three hunts scheduled this year, hopefully one of them will be as short as yours. Congratulations.

I used to use a 300 WSM. After 6 or 8 elk with it, I realized that every one of them could have been shot just as well with my 30-06 that weighs a pound less. At my age, not carrying that pound all day is important. I haven't sold the 300 but I haven't shot it in several years.

Sold that 300 right off, the remaining handloads with it, ha. I paid my bill, tried the Mark X, realized I am "spoiled" to the faster lock-time and handling (plus lighter weight) of the Mod 700/or clone, Turned around, sold it too! Bought another Bergara B14 Hunter in 30-06. ha Plus, ordered another Trigger Tech Special for it. I am really impressed with the accuracy "right out of the box" with them! I had one briefly in 6.5 Creedmoor, very accurate, trigger went down safely to 2#; just had no use for it, sold it for a younger family man's use, I love the big guns, especially for Plains Game or really heavy critters (though I've killed nothing, anywhere I couldn't have with a 30-06 and the right load of course) , just am tired of the "boot n beller" and weight of them. I also have realized I don't care for the "standard" short action rounds, (with the 6.5/284 and similar speeds preferred) plus the 300WSM is the exception, especially in a Kimber, its so much like a 30-06 in recoil/handling. IF I ever was to hunt somewhere I needed to shoot over 400yds, I'd just use my SILs 300RUM I had made for him. He has one of those "dial-em-in" with its Huskemaw scope. This last cow makes my "average range" for elk 171yds, ha. I'm still around 75yds average on mule deer!
