Does anyone have any idea why a Massey Ferguson 1433 won't shift into forward or reverse when the transmission is in gear? The lever is on the steering column it will move into position fine if the engine is off or if the transmission is in neutral. In gear it won't shift forward or reverse, so trying to get it on a trailer to have it looked is going to be a pain in the ass

Is it the power shuttle transmission, or the hydrostatic?

I don't think so, it shifts into all gears fine , there is a lever on the steering column for forward reverse and neutral that I can't move unless the engine is off or the shifting lever is in neutral

My guess is that a wire has come unplugged. Those are controlled electronically, and when the message to shift doesn't get to the transmission, it just won't do anything.

Thanks I will take a look when it gets light out I appreciate it Hope that's all it is. My big tractor did the same thing when it was new. Had to get the mechanic out to the field.. PITA. He crawled underneath with a flashlight, and found where a connector had come unplugged, plugged it back, and it shifted like a champ. Still is. I don't think that connector was clicked in solid from the factory.

It probably has a mechanical shifter with a synchronizer. The synchronizer is most likely bad. A lot of small to midsize tractors develop the same problem. Just noticed it is a Kioti. There is no stop on the shuttle shifter and it lets it cam over and lose parts out of the synchronizer. They are made sort of like the old Ford synchronizer with the small little wedges that hold everything in place. When it over shifts they fall out. Will require a teardown for repair.

I'm not an Ag mechanic, but many brands have a safety feature that requires the forward-reverse power shuttle to have sufficient oil pressure in the shuttle unit to allow the control lever to be moved. Designed to prevent burning up the shuttle discs by low oil pressure slippage. Imagine a spring loaded hydraulic piston...when there is no or insufficient oil pressure, the spring forces the piston one direction to engage a pin into the control lever linkage, locking it in neutral...as oil pressure builds up to operating level, the oil on the other side of the piston overcomes the spring tension...retracting the neutral safety pin. So, check your shuttle unit oil level, clean the suction screen or change the filter. If that doesn't help, get a book and or a real Ag mechanic.
Well this is a fine pickle we're in, should'a listened to Joe McCarthy and George Orwell I guess.

The Kioti is a different tractor. The OP's tractor is a Massey Ferguson 1433.

My bad. Did not notice that the post with the pic and the OP were two different people. Some small MF tractors are mechanical shift and some are hydraulic shift. you will have to check your owners manual or with your dealer to see which yours has.

I had something similar on an old Deutz tractor. turned out to be a clutch issue. Lucky for me I have a GOOD friend who loves old diesel tractors and fixed it basically for beer money. Otherwise it would still be laying where it fell so to speak. He ended up having to break it in 2 to fix it.
They say everything happens for a reason. For me that reason is usually because I've made some bad decisions that I need to pay for.
