No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.

A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.

Since I only have one rifle now it makes the “choice” part moot. Tikka T3 Lite Stainless in 30-06.

At home in Nebraska, 22-250, 257 Roberts, 6.5 CM, 300 Savage,and 35 Remington.

On the road in NH; for over-watch either a CLR in 30-06 or a Marlin XL7 in 25-06, for still-hunting or tracking if there is snow on the ground a Remington 760 in 30-06.

I might even go across the border into ME to hunt around my Uncle Don's camp on Highland Lake in Bridgton, ME.

I gave my friend, Andy, a Savage 170 in 30-30 with the barrel trimmed back to 18" that he seems to like, if I've interpreted his grunts to be positive grunts. I also gave him a Remington 572 to practice with, both of them mounted with old Weaver V4.5s with PCH reticles. If he practices with the 572, he should be ready to punch his NH and VT deer tags with the 170. He finally ran out of ammo for the Winchester 70 in 25 WSSM that I loaned to him for one season a decade or so ago, so he gave it back to me with a little more character than I remember it having, but friends are forever while stuff comes and goes.

This year will be the resurrected 1969 M70 pushfeed with the .270 Hugh Williamson Precision barrel. 130 grain Ballistic Tips and Accubonds shoot well.

On back up is the 7-08 Weatherby Vanguard.

Deer with tikka 3x SL 6.5. Hoping to pop it’s cherry.

Elk tikka 06 168 ttsx
Daughter is coming for elk, so she can choose 6.5 CM with 127 LRX or 270 with 130 ttsx. So one of those will be the back up Rifle

All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.

Tikka 6.5 Creed for antelope, deer and elk. Even bear if I run into one. Sold the Tikka 300, and the Rem 78 is needing a new barrel. Can’t decide on whether to stick with 270, or go 280AI.

Howa .308 win. Used to be a lightweight with a pencil barrel, also had a Leupold 2.8-8X36 VX-3i. It was too muzzle light and it finally irritated me too much, so I put a McGowen Precision 20" Remington Sporter contour barrel on it, changed the scope to a Nightforce 3-10X42, replaced the HACT trigger with a Timney, and Pillar bedded it.

Initial impressions are that it shoots a little better, how much I don't know, but I'll keep playing with loads to see if it has a preference and what it is. With a couple loads I've tested, it's a fairly dangerous deer rifle for the deer in my area.

It sits in the hands very well now.

Next will be the Howa Stainless 6.5 Creedmoor in an Alpine stock.

If I kill something with both of these, I'll bring out the late wife's Kimber .243 and try to kill one for her.

Good luck buddy. Hope you crush a couple good ones with both rifles. They sound like they mean a bunch to you!

Newly acquired NULA in 257 Bee 🐝 or the tried and true Kimber Subalpine in 280 Ackley...or a Kimber Classic Select in 7mm-08. Decisions, decisions.

I'll have to check out the 416 R Alaskan.

I've wanted to play with a 416 Rem Mag for a long time and NO ONE close to me has one that I can PLAY with.
Great idea. Thnx

Sounds like a great rifle. How fast does the 350 move from your rifle.
