I need to cut into a hillside about 4' wide and up to 18" deep.

I also need to dig 18" holes 36" deep.

I can get a Bobcat that has a bucket about 4' wide which is really larger than I want or I can get a dingo

The guy at the rental place said the Dingo would probably struggle digging into the ground and I'd need to break it up.

But that the hole digging wouldn't be a problem.

I would like to know if anyone has used a Dingo to cut into a hillside and if I'd end up having to do a bunch of prep work with it. I know the Bobcat would just come in and knock it out but I'm going to tear up more land than I want with it.

Why not a mini excavator instead of the bobcat?

I don't recommend a dingo. Find a Ditch Witch SK (mini skid steer). First, it has lots of power. Secondly, you stand on it and the controls are pilot operated. Your hands will thank you at the end of the day. Tons of attachments available.

The Toro Dingo will struggle to do the job, run with the Bobcat, you'll be much happier

Sorry, I tried, I really tried not to, but I've been dying to post that since the OP.

everyone is telling me to use the bobcat so I guess I will. I'm a little intimidated to use one but I'll figure it out.

Don’t even think about the Dingo.
Have owned both, Dingo is long gone.
On your project, frustration will set in quick with the Dingo...

You're not a retard that can't do for yourself, I've seen what you can do and you'll be just fine. Practice a little but before digging and you'll be a pro.

This.....and dont be afraid of the bobcat. Run it around and operate the controls a bit before trying to actually do work with it. As far as tearing turf up, just take it easy on turns....dont "skid steer" it real sharp and fast on the turf and you should be fine. Also no need to run in wide open throttle when not actually doing work until you get used to it. Only use I ever had for a dingo was augering post holes and using a trencher attachment for small jobs. One I owned is also long gone.

they're not that hard for that sort of task. just take a little time to familiarize yourself with it. very intuitive. it takes a bit of experience to be a "smooth operator" but herky jerky gets it done too.

ok, so after reading the replies I feel better about it

guy at the rental place told me demand is big but will drop off in a couple of weeks. I said "why because of fall? and he said, nope, no one does projects just before an election"

oh well, I'm optimistic I guess

I’m sure there are YouTube vids that might be helpful. Rental place will explain controls when they unload it (assuming delivery).

Take 20 minutes to “ play” with it and familiarize yourself. Not rocket surgery.
