Howdy;
I am going to pick up a Kimber Montana later this week, the dealer has the rifle in 338 Federal and 7mm-08, which, of these two calibers, would you choose in this little rifle? Just curious.

Hey, Keez... I just ordered a Kimber 84M Montana a few days ago. I was considering 308 Win or 7mm-08 Rem. I decided to go with 308 Win for various reasons. But, of the two you have mentioned, I would obviously go with 7mm-08 Rem. Mine will be used for medium-sized big game, for the most part, so I think 338 Fed would probably be a little overkill in that department. That is just my opinion anyway. Enjoy yours, when you get it.

Since, I've used the 7X57 for many years, I use two .308's and I also currently use a .280, I think a .338 would suit me better. E

I mostly hunt a fairly verticle area of Northern Idaho for deer, elk and black bear. My knees and back are starting to go and I need something light in a caliber that won't kick the snot out of me.

This is one of the few cases where being a handloader is not absolutely necessary for buying a rifle in a newly-developed cartridge. Federal is selling a wide variety of ammunition, from Fusion bullets for deer to TSX's for elk. Of course, if you are a handloader, so much the better . I think the .338 Federal is pretty skookum for what you want it for. You can shoot 180 gr Accubonds, 185 TSX's, 200 Hornady's, 210 Partitions, and so on. Velocities are adequate; recoil will be manageable; effect on game will be sterling. At least that's what I believe -- I'm having one built on a Ruger 77 RSI . JMHO -- YMMV. DN

My .338 Federal (Kimber 84M Classic)has much less recoil than I was anticipating. I figured it would bang me around, but it was less than a 30-06, and not punishing in the least.

The Kimber 84M Montana's don't kick at all. At least not up through the 308 shooting 165's. Get whatever cartridge turns you on.
I don't think that the factory load ballistics are reachable with handloads. They must be using high energy technology.
For your big game hunting I would go with the big bullet.

I personally struggle with the 338 Federal concept. I keep coming back to why launch bullets of lower sectional density at moderate velocities vs the .308 with bullets of higher SD and perhaps BC? I belong to the school of shooting thru whatever, so that a better blood trail is produced if needed, So I am headed towards a new 308 Winchester, also won't most 338 bullets you find be designed for 338 Win Mag velocities?? There was a black bear story in AR where the 338 Federal failed on hitting a shoulder this I mention only as an interesting story it proves nothing about the 338 Federal. Then again I used to think the WSM was baloney as well...so I will ask what will the 338 Federal do that the 308 Winchester will not?

At woods ranges I know that the 358 Win keeps deer down better than the 30-06 or the 7mm RM. Can't say that the 338 is going to be superior to the 7mm on much bigger and tougher game but I would not bet against it.
Its amazing how little felt recoil there is from the 84M Montana's or Classics.

338 Federal without a doubt. I like the bigger bullet thing.
