When I first got into reenacting maybe eight years back I bought a bunch of stuff.

A common reenactorism are these maybe 9” square little iron Hibachi-looking things on legs with a grill on top, they run efficiently on charcoal.

In actuality I’ve never used mine for that, never used it at a re-enactment on account of my schtick at such things is to only bring what I can walk in in one trip, early 19th century backpacking.

This past week I got to messing around with it just to light it up after dark. Bought some mesquite charcoal for the scent and a bag of Match Light charcoal lighter-infused charcoal.

The Match Light charcoal worked, but reeked of charcoal lighter fluid for a good while, so did the bag sitting on my porch.

I picked up a packet of 12 Croglan’s Fire Sticks at Academy today. Just one stick burned like a champ and ignited the charcoal just fine. No discernible chemical odor.

A discrete box of kitchen matches or lighter, and some unobtrusive fire sticks (crypto-farb 😉) and ill be all set for my next encampment.

I like to use pieces of fire log to start the charcoal, no funky charcoal lighter fluid smell.

There is no way a cap and ball pistol would fire after being in the water like what happened right after that scene.

I think the gun was in the bubbles rather than in the water.

Cartridge conversions.
Remember Blondie cleaning his at the hotel?
Then Tuco putting his together at the general
store, then telling the store clerk " CARTRIDGE. . " ?

Plus, it's a movie. They can do whatever they
want to regardless of how implausible it is

Will light after being submerged in water
Fire Sticks will light after being submerged IF they'e immediately taken out of the water before it does more than getting them barely damp and IF you break them in half to expose the dry interior. IOW, keep them dry.

For a fast, hot fire starter, I haven't found anything better than these ZIP cubes, from Walmart. Just light the wrapper and they'll burn hot for 10 to 15 min or longer. They are a little more expensive than the Fire Sticks, though. Walmart also sells some almost identical ones by Duraflame.

I've been using similar product for years now.. Lighting my wood stove has never been easier. Also used 'em for lighting the charcoal grill. They're OUTstanding.

These are the ones I use: https://www.amazon.com/Starters-Cha...e+starters&qid=1601381902&sr=8-4

Just walk around in the woods. Fatwood is laying pretty much everywhere. Look for pine stumps.

When discussions about emergency fires come up, I’ve mentioned Coghlan’s fire sticks as a good thing to have. Also, Coghlan’s fire paste.
