Looking to change. I have used Pyrodex and #11 primer, for years, asking for input on the new to me options. Rifle is a late 1980's Knight MK85 and #11 caps. I do not want to buy a new breech plug for the 209 primer.

For substitutes Triple Seven or Black MZ. Both ignite well with #11s and cleanup is much better than Pyrodex. Your 85 won't work well with Black Horn even if you swap to 209 primers.

For that gun I'd get a musket cap nipple and switch to Triple 7. It's a really clean burning powder if you don't run a 209 primer. #11's will not reliably ignite Triple 7 IME

Real black powder is the best for lighting with 11 caps. Just a pain to clean up.
It will light though in a clean gun. Pyrodex is harder to light from what I have seen. And is still a pain to clean.
Graf and sons has Black powder available and will ship it.

American Pioneer Powder has restarted powder production after a plant explosion in 2016.
Their 3F powder burns very clean and provides the best performance.
It's only available from a few places, and is also being sold by Graf's under the label "Shooters World Multi-Purpose Black FFF Sulfurless Powder."
The product page states that it's made by American Pioneer Powder and it's the cheapest price for a pound of it right now.
It likes to be compressed and is the best igniting substitute powder.
Always keep the lid on the bottle to seal out moisture.
Here's a link to this new batch of 3F powder: --->>> https://www.grafs.com/retail/catalog/product/productId/83678

See my other post to see the outfits that are selling APP 3F powder with the original label. --->>> https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbt...-back-in-business-available#Post15277669

Black MZ has been discontinued for a while now and no longer available..
But it was made by American Pioneer Powder and sold under the Black MZ label.
It was the same powder as APP except it had a larger granulation.

I found Pyrodex harder to clean than regular Black powder. However as for the others Blackhorn is unreasonably expensive, Triple 7 needs a "chamber" configuration it likes, leaves a ring of powder in front of the "chamber" making it hard to load and provides no better ballistics than Pyrodex or regular Black powder. Jim Shockeys Gold doesn't provide the speeds the others do same as the American Pioneer powders.

Nonsense, Triple7 is faster than Pyrodex and all real black but Swiss. Its only slightly faster than Swiss. Use a percussion cap and the crud ring is minimal with Triple7. Its horrible though with any 209 primer ive tried. Pellets produced similar speeds but loose does not. Pyrodex is garbage if you want velocity. Triple7 will match BH209 with lighter bullet weights and moderate charges.

I would try Triple7 2FG or Swiss. Both easily beat Pyrodex speeds. Breach plugs can be stubborn to remove with T7 so keep an eye on that too. Swiss is a little better in that regard and Swiss ignites very easily. If you cant find Swiss look for Olde Enysford. Its a higher performance black powder also. Made by Goex.

APP powders clean up easy and ignite easy but other than that they are junk. Performance is similar to Pyrodex, granules are like kitty litter and extreme velocity spreads suck compared to other powders.
