The Barnes site is showing Varget at 2910 Velocity and TAC at 2986 with a 24" barrel in a 308. What can one expect in a 22" barrel with this bullet? Am in process of loading some up for elk and have a 22" barrel Model 70. Thanks.

Max charge of CFE-223 will put you north of 3,000 fps in a 22" bbl. Almost took this rifle/load with me moose hunting last month.
You'll give up ~ 50 fps in the shorter tube.

Wringing-out a Kimber 84M this spring, CFE223 got that bullet to 2,945 fps for me, but I got better groups with R15 at 2,905 fps. I didn't sweat those 40 fps.

What was said above - I actually chronied identical 150gr loads out of a 22" .308 and 20" .308 and velocity dropped 50 fps. Pretty much confirms the idea of losing about 25 fps per inch of barrel for this class of load. For your hunt, even 100 fps difference wouldn't concern me much.

I got ~2850 with a max load of Varget or RL15 with the 150 ttsx. It killed a cow elk.
I switched to the 130 TTSX at 3050 with 49.5 RL and killed 2 cows. If you haven't bought the 150's yet, try the 130's. The Barnes loves to be pushed fast.

Cool Blueboy. If the 150's don't shoot well, don't be afraid to use th0se 130's on bigger critters than deer.

My Winchester 308 is 30 fps faster than my Kimber 308. Both have 22" barrels. My 20" Tikka CTR 308 is faster than either by 25-30 fps. My Winchester 30-06 is 60-90 fps faster than my Remington 30-06. Both have 22" barrels.
If you start with a known velocity from a 308 barrel you'll see 10-15 fps velocity loss for each inch you cut it shorter. But when comparing speeds from different guns 2" of barrel means a lot less than the individual barrel.
Most people don't really want the truth.
They just want constant reassurance that what they believe is the truth.

With the Barnes 150 TTSX BT: 2816 in a Remington 700 5R Mil-Spec 24" using 45 Varget, 2848 with 44 H4895;
NULA 22", 46 Varget = 2828: 44 H4895 = 2850 (Rem. brass) 2815 (Win. brass)
150 TTSX BT is a great elk bullet in the .308.

I haven't handloaded the 150-grain TTSX in my 308 but Barnes factory loads run 2,886 fps from a 22" barrel with typically superb Barnes accuracy.
Okie John
If Montana had a standing army, a 270 Win with Federal Blue Box 130's would be the standard issue.

Okie John Believe that is a 24" barrel with H4895 they are using to get 2886 fps. At top of page on the Barnes site.

Is CFE-223 able to get close to 3000 fps in a 22" barrel?....and what is the grains in MAX charge for a 150 g TTSX Barnes?....not on Barnes site and no information as to MAX as I can find.

I saw that, but that figure is from Barnes factory loads over a MagnetoSpeed chronograph on my 22" M-700. Probably just a coincidence that the figures are identical. I'm definitely happy with it.
