Correct me if I am wrong ,as I was young at the time and don't remember all that happened . Read some on it recently ,but who knows if what I read was the truth.
Didn't appear to me that Nixon did anything wrong ,other than trying to cover up what the Republicans did on the break in. What I read said he did not order the break in . Seems like what has happened in the past 12 years is much worse than that ,but a certain party gets away with all the tricks they are pulling now ???? Your thoughts

I was a young cub reporter just on his way to Journalism School when all this blew up.
1) If Nixon had not been deeply paranoid about the Democrats, the break-in would not have happened. Nixon was always a deeply suspicious person. This episode played to his weaknesses. 2) Nixon's other fault was he over-estimated his abilities to talk his way out of things. This lead to the "I'm not a crook!" speech. 3) Nixon believed in being loyal to his subordinates. This lead to the cover-up.
Honestly, if Nixon had burned the tapes out on the White House lawn and said it was a matter of national security, the whole thing would have died.
BTW: I know the guy that wired the White House, San Clemente, and Key Biscayne. In fact, he stuck his foot through the ceiling, wiring the VP's residence. We worked together about 20 years ago. Sparky had stories. One day, he was in the Oval Office, and asked Nixon where the bathroom was. Nixon pointed him to the hidden john in the Oval Office.
The biggest problem was that the Press was out to get him. What Nixon did was piddling compared to JFK, LBJ, and even DDE. The Press gave them all a pass. They wanted Nixon hung.

My impressions gained from my reading about Watergate are:
Nixon was as great a patriot as was Reagan and as is Trump.
McGovern was as great a danger to the republic as Obama, Hillary, and Biden are or have been.
Nixon told his staff to make sure they kept McGovern out, no matter what it took. And he did it for the betterment of the republic.
The leftists in the media saw their wildest dreams come true with Johnson in power. They anticipated America's rapid slide into Socialism. The leftists were incensed to see their plans stymied by a true Conservative when Nixon was elected in '66, and even more so with his reelection in '70.
The left attacked Nixon and Reagan with only slightly less fervor than they do Trump. When they actually found evidence of criminal activity, the press went nuts in a feeding frenzy, and eviscerated Nlxon.
Imagine the fury, if Trump had ever actually committed a crime.

Imagine the fury, if Trump had ever actually committed a crime. Well, I can say that as a first time voter during that election, even though as many 18 year olds do I had some Democratic leanings, after watching the debates I voted for RMN. No way did I want McGovern in there, he really blew it in those debates, even to my 18 year old mind. I still almost consider it a mistaken vote, but given the fact that many politicians (most?) take liberties with the rules I no longer look at it as such a bad thing. My first case of voting for the better of two bad choices. Here's what burns me some to this day..........." When they actually found evidence of criminal activity" he was pretty much run out of office. That I can agree with. But, then when he dies, what do "we" do? We lower the flag for 30 days to "Honor" him. Seems to me that years earlier "we the People" had determined he wasn't so honorable, dishonorable enough he had to vacate the highest office in the land. And folks were saying, look at the good he did, like getting started on normalizing relations with China. How's that working out now. Perhaps a better route would have been to say "we're going to do everything we can to keep your country's economy in the 18th or early 19th century until your people revolt again to do away with Maoism. Then we'll help you folks out" The state of medicine today is in part highly influenced by Nixon signing the HMO act of 1973. By taking power away from the States to say health care decisions are made by your doctor and giving that power to HMO's (some owned by insurance companies, for profit of course). And of course his actions in the Watergate scandal and coverup seriously impacted respect for the Office in many folks. Of course, we old timers who might remember that are dying out, so maybe the respect for the Office will return someday? He may have been a good "Conservative", but in the end he was a crook, contrary to what he said in his infamous TV appearance.
The desert is a true treasure for him who seeks refuge from men and the evil of men. In it is contentment In it is death and all you seek (Quoted from "The Bleeding of the Stone" Ibrahim Al-Koni)

I actually voted for the Schmidt/Anderson ticket. I wasn't in love with either of the main two candidates. Anderson later ran for President in 1979 as I recall. My girlfriend at the time was a supporter. She wised up when he dropped out and supported Mr. Reagan for the vote.
