It’s the 20-60x85mm HD right? Anyway, it’s what I’ve had for some years. It’s heavy, big and not a backpack scope but it suits well what I bought it for.

My thought is it would take a very significant jump in price to get any discernible improvement in glass.

Ok, mine is the Razor HD 20-60. The model you are looking at might be a little smaller, lighter.

Look at the Athlon Cronus 20-60x86 ED Spotting Scope. I think you'll find it to be a superior optic. Normally $1,499.99, we have them on sale for only $999.99
Aprochromatic Lens System: Apochromatic lense system gives you the result of images which have greater contrast, sharpness and color definition
ED Glass: ED glass gives you an image with little or no chromatic fringe so the final result brings a clearer and sharper image to your eyes
ESP Dielectric Coating: ESP Dielectric Coating is a multi layer prism coating that reflects over 99% of the light to your eyes bringing you a clear, bright image that displays accurate color reproduction.
Magnesium Chassis: Magnesium chassis give you the strength of a metal chassis while reducing the weight as much as 30%
XPL Coating: XPL Coating gives you an extra protection on the exterior lenses from dirt, oil and scratches
Bak4 Prism: Bak-4 glass prisms reflect more light to your eyes which will give you brighter and sharper image.
Advanced Fully Multi-Coated: Advanced Fully Multi-Coated lenses gives you better light transmission to bring optimum brightness and true color across the entire light spectrum.
Argon Purged: Argon Purging uses the inertia gas with bigger size molecules to purge any moisture out of the tube giving you better waterproofing and thermal stability .
Waterproof: Waterproof to protects the binocular in the harshest weather conditions or if accidently submerged underwater
Dual Focus: Dual focus has dual speed focus knobs that offer both faster and finer focus adjustment
Rotating Ring: Rotating Ring allows you to rotate the scope around tripod supporting ring into the most comfortable and convenient angle for observation

For the range or for hunting? Or scoping critters from the truck (or close by)?

If hunting the 27x is waaay to high of magnification to set up the spotter and quickly finding the critter in the field of view. Plus, that high of a magnification is too high to scan with when binos don't cut it.

I’d be looking hard at the new tract

All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.

The rough way I broke it down: general purpose — an 8x-10x bino. To scan a good 15x56 Bino (easier on the eyes than a spotter). To identify, or detail, a good spotter.

Bigger body, same eyepiece, heavier.

Fotis, don't overlook the Pentax PF80-EDA. It makes range work a real pleasure. It's big and heavy so I probably wouldn't want to use it for backpack hunting. However, in my opinion, the size and weight help to add to it's stability, especially with a good tripod or bench mount. I'm not a bird watcher, but hear it is a popular spotting scope among this group.

If your budget will allow, take a look at the Kowa 553/554.

First off I would never buy a Vortex, would NEVER have an angled unless I was a birdwatcher (I am not).

Why not a vortex? Their RAZOR line is awesome! Not talking diamondbacks and crossfires here.
