I’m looking for the correct ring height and setup for my Ruger No 1a. I’m putting a leupold gloss 2-7x33, so would low rings work, or will the objective touch the rear site? I was planning on Ruger 3b rings in blue or leupold gloss, but I’m open for suggestions also.

I have not used a 2-7x33mm, so I can't comment specifically to that scope. However, I have used a Leupold 2.5-8x36mm and 6x36mm on a couple of #1's.

With these two, I have had no issues using low (#3) rings and getting them far enough rear to give me good views through the scope. The rear sight can be pushed out of the dovetail and turned around (so it folds aft) if you need just a fudge more clearance rearward.

I do like the view when these scopes are mounted in low rings...doesn't require raising much off the stock comb to get a good view. However, I have come to realize that I prefer these scopes mounted in medium (#4) rings just to give my fingers a little bit more room when loading and unloading in the breach area. And while I have to come off the stock just a bit, it isn't enough to really affect my shooting or perceived recoil.

Do you currently have a set of rings?

Ruger low rings are still pretty high compared to most other scopes on bolt actions. Their #3, which is their lowest, will allow a 40mm objective to clear the rear sight but it has to be mounted a tad bit forward. A 33mm objective should be fine. Plus if a scope bell touches it you could always remove the rear sight which will slide right out.

Thanks everyone for the responses! I went ahead and ordered the Ruger #3’s. I’m looking forward to trying them out!

Might need offsets if not an old Leupold 2-7 of long tube.

I managed to take some time yesterday afternoon and snap a few pics to compare #3's and #4's.

Here is a VX-III 2.5-8x36mm mounted in #3 rings. Note that the sight is flipped 180 degrees so it folds aft.

Here is a FX-II 6x36mm mounted in #4 rings. Lot more room...and I could scoot the scope even further rearward if I wanted, but I would have to use an offset rear ring (I just don't have any onhand right now).

I was looking to see if I had any #3 rings laying around but I see you already ordered. I have some loose #4's though if you want a set to play with and see which work better for you.

Thanks for the pictures of the comparisons War Eagle. The #3s that I ordered will be here on Monday to try out, and I will get with you about the #4s.

Leupold 6x36 in low rings. Note sight flipped 180 degrees and also that the objective bell is about as close to the ring as possible. IIRC the turret yoke (or whatever is the right term for it is) was almost touching the rear ring.

I've used lows on 2-7 Leupolds also. I suspect you will be happy.

Bumping this with a question about the Ruger off set rings...

Is there anything wrong with using one off set and one regular ring? I think using one off set as the rear ring will get me all the extra that I need.

No problem at all. I have two 1V's and a 1B set up exactly like that. Works well.

Edited: adding a pic I have on hand. 1V .25-06 w/ VX-II 4-12x50mm. No pics of the 1B on hand.
