I recently bought a Lyman GPH here on the fire. The previous owner (great guy to deal with) used hornady great plains bullets.

Well unfortunately they're discontinued. I sent a email to Hornady request they bring them back but I know that was a worthless gesture.

Anyway any guidance for an alternative would be appreciated. I really don't want to cast but I may have too.

also I'm hoping I can get a round ball to shoot in the 32" twist barrel. My research showed trying .530 to .535 balls and varying thickness of patches may work. Any thought s on this

thanks!

My Lyman is a Deerstalker 1/48 twist but it’s shoots a .530 RB and a patch quite nicely.

No sabots? A 250 or 300 XTP would do very well.

I am selling a big selection of 54 bullets.

If you wanted to go the ball route, I would try 530, and a 0.020 or 0.018 patch. 70 or 80 grains of black powder. 3F is about 10% more speed than 2F. 2F seems to be more forgiving.

Track of the Wolf sells cast T/C Maxi balls. They shoot great in my Hawken, will shoot even better with your fast twist GPH.

Good luck!

Haven’t tried it yet, but one of my odd notions is that a roundball may shoot okay in a fast-twist barrel placed in the appropriate sabot. I have some .457 RBs and .50 cal sabots for .458 bullets.

I always suspected that a big part of the problem with RBs in barrels twisted for bullets was the depth of the rifling more than the twist. I’ve read that original Hawkens were twisted 1-48”, but obviously they did ok with RBs and lots of powder.

I own the same rifle. I still shoot the 425 grain Hornady great plains bullets, but these will be the ones I will use, when I run out. As I understand, an under bullet felt is required, for the best accuracy. The reviews I've read, rave on them, and say they are very deadly on big game.

Well the faster the twist the slower I push round balls for accuracy. That said I got 4 inch groups at 100 yards from a 1-28 twist 50 caliber barrel running 90 grs. of 3F out of one of my TC's. This being an exception I think. Both my 54 barrels have 1-48 twist barrels and my favorite loads from them run to 70-80 grains of 3F and a strong patch. I like .530 balls. I don't know the velocity produced but there seems to be no issues killing deer out to 100 yards. My old eyes allow me to make 2.5 inch groups with irons so I think that is pretty good.
