Found it tucked away while cleaning out Dad's gun safe. Haven't seen it since I was a kid 40 years ago. Hasn't missed a second that I can tell since I started it several weeks ago.

Grandfather worked for Southern Pacific for 38 years.

Did a little detective work.

Hamilton 992B ModelA Railway Special. Movement Serial dates it to 1943. Has watch inspector marks scribed into back cover denoting railroad official use and inspection certifications. $90 in 1943.

Enjoy

Supposedly the inflation of $90 in 1943 to 2020 would be $1,354.06 at 1404.5%. Pretty cool piece nonetheless, and I wonder what percentage of people actually had a personal time piece back then. I've had a watch ever since I was 6 y/o, but I don't think I've ever spent more than $300 for one.

I've got a 992B as well, but the dial is a bit different. Yours is a lever-set? I will try to dig it out and snap a few photos if I have the time tomorrow.

Yup lever set which was apparently a requirement for official railroad use.

I have several artifacts so to speak of my grandfathers time on the rail road. Guess I should put together a gallery.

Some of his rail keys he kept.

Very cool! I’ve always like pocket watches...thought they represented mfg precision out of proportion with the times they were made.

Very cool... I also have my grandfather's Hamilton - but it's not the railroad version.. S/N on this one dates it to about 1909... But I have to research further..

I'm glad you shared those pics today.. Best wishes. smile

To set time, remove (unscrew) crystal, lift tiny lever on upper right edge.. engages the setting mechanism, set hands then by using crown, then push lever back down and screw the crystal back on.
Watch can not be accidentally set by an accidental tug on the crown and is locked until reset.

Much easier to do than say!

A normal watch is set by pulling the winding stem out. A lever set watch requires pulling a hard to get at lever to change the time. This prevents accidentally changing the time while winding, which is important in a railroad watch.

Grandpa retired after 40 years with Santa Fe. Started out on a bridge gang. He always had a pocket watch on him. One of his side gigs was watch and clock repair.
