Have you seen this? Boy, that's deep. Do you think it punctured a lung? I'm surprised it didn't kill that steer.

That's going to leave a mark!

No wonder in some places cattle folks don't want more elk around.

Yikes.

I think it was too high on the shoulder to have caught a lung.

Earlier in the month, I posted this photo...

Cow is doing better.

It was not my cow. Friend in Montana's cow.

It was shot on purpose... twice. It's calf was also shot.

That is some abscess.

Always heard them called "slow elk". Never knew anyone that actually tried to kill one. Although some years a gut pile is found and a few head go missing from local USFS grazing allottments.

A few years ago there was some jackass in a neighboring county driving around gut shooting beeves (22 LR) from the road. The last time I saw it mentioned in the paper, he had killed approximately 8 head. I don't think they ever caught the bastard.

Hopefully a rancher caught him in the act, and that is why we never heard any more about it.

Worthless phuquer. Catch em and shoot em in the face.

I noticed that was abscessed when the pulled the elk antler out.

Pretty easy fix....

Purge the abscess, flush with water, squirt a 60cc syringe of hydrogen peroxide into the cavity, and give the cow 20cc's of penicillin a day for a couple of days.

Should hair over fine.

Same treatment we always used for lump jaw. For those not familiar, an abscess on the face or jaw from an embedded barbed cheat grass seed.
