Looking at a rock island 1903 to add to collection. I know to avoid below 280,xxx serial numbers due to heat treat. This one is 397,xxx. Should i be OK? Its kind of a beater/field grade and i wanna shoot it alot. I know it still needs to be checked out but wanted to make sure i was starting with a good base. Thanks

Yes, it's a good one. After approximately #285,000 RI receivers were made of nickel steel and were on par with the nickel steel receivers that Springfield Armory switched to later. In fact, when RI shut down '03 production, all the NS receivers they had left over were bundled off to Springfield where they were filtered into Springfield's production line.
As with any of these old rifles, no matter where/when made, a fellow is smart to have headspace checked before shooting them. One doesn't know if the original bolt was swapped out by Bubba or not.
