I'm looking for a 24", take down, replacement barrel in 303. Looking for minty to NOS. A Westfield address would be outstanding. For those that know about my Westfield 22 HP barrel, you can add one and one and see where I may be going with this?

Joe, talk about looking for a needle in a haystack! I’m afraid you’re in for a long search. The 99B is the only model cataloged with a 24” takedown barrel, and Savage didn’t make many of those. All other takedown models with 303 barrels were 20” or 22”.

I have two 24” takedown barrels in 303. One is attached to a 99 B, and the other is attached to an EG, ser. no. 399XXX which was perhaps assembled during WWII.

A 24” barrel in 303 with a Westfield address? Forget about it!

P.S. I hope you prove me wrong.

All of the later "replacement" barrels were 24". It might be easier/cheaper just to have one made. But, I found the 22 HP, 24", Westfield address. I'd like to find it's big brother. I wish I could have found the action the barrel was made for. The guy I bought it from said he parted the gun out and the action was long gone.

303 with a Westfield address?

Why not a 32-40 with a Westfield address?

Might as well aim high...

A few years back when numrich sold parts from the factory bankrupcy. A ton of good stuff probably where your 22hp barrel came from and maybe they had a 303? Pretty sure I have a 26 inch take down from a 99b here bore is good but could use refinishing.

Such a doubter! You’ve seen the 22HP barrel with the Westfield address. I’m going for the Savage set first, then start on the Winchester’s.

If Rory could jump in here with dates and details it would help. But, I know that the factory would provide “Replacement” barrels, for obsolete cartridges, into the 60’s, hence my 22HP, Westfield barrel, and it is NOT square threads. It screws into all of my take downs. All of the Replacement barrels were 24”, with the same front sight. So, I want a switch barrel set with 24” barrels. I doubt if it would be harder to find than a “K”in 22 HP, and a lot cheaper.

Chris, I don’t think this was one of the surplus barrels, it came off a rifle that was parted out. It’s the one I was talking to you about indexing to an action, I just haven’t decided which action to use. The only way I found it on GB was the seller didn’t have the word, Savage, in the add. He had a couple 99’s for sale and I clicked on “ Sellers other items”. He had it listed as, “oddball 22 barrel”. When I saw the pics I new it was “ODD” and kind of special. Got it for about $100.

So, when I say Replacement, I don’t mean any old barrel that will screw in, I mean a, “Factory Replacement”. That way it will be 24”, and match my HP barrel. Barrel stamps may be different, but they won’t match the action, because the will be much newer.

I think Joe made a typo somewhere there....

What was the barrel that came from the action you sold to Jeff with the square threads?

Chris you'd have to refresh my tired and wore out memory. I don't remember selling Jeff an action. I'm sure I did if you say so, just don't remember. I already checked my barrel stash and sent Joe a message. No luck here.

Sorry Chris, for confusing things. It's a barrel made after 1960 at Westfield that screws into all early square thread take downs. I think I said that backwards.

1961:
3. We furnish 22 Hi-Power, 243, 250-3000, 303, 30-30, 300, 308 and 358 barrels. When converting, additional parts are fitted along with new barrel.
4. Length of barrels in all calibers for standard weight rifles (EG, R, RS, etc) is 24"; for the new style Model 99-F Lightweight, 22".

They would still convert some 99s to 22HP, 303 and 30-30.

Unfortunately for your next quest, they would no longer do 38-55, 25-35, 32-40.

Thanks Rory, I need to get Gary as a translator/ proof reader. He knows what I mean even if I don’t.

The 1961 conversion list says 24” barrel for all calibers in standard weight rifles, and 22” in the later 99 F lightweight rifle. These are all solid frame rifles.

Now I’m more confused. My barrel appears to be a 24” lightweight that fits my early F take down, including the indexing notch, and it fits my F forearm.

So, where does it fall in the world of Replacement barrels? Is my 22HP a unicorn? Do you think a matching 303 take down barrel was ever made?. It might be easier to just buy a new tube and have Chris contour it. I was realy hoping to find a factory one. I don’t care what barrel stamp is on it, I just wanted it to match. Thanks ol’ buddy.

I have two Chicopee replacement brls... .22HP and a .30-30, both are 24" medium weight. The early featherweight forearm will not fit.

What is the serial range of your "early F"?

I'd have to go look Rick, but it's a 1927 or 8. Heading out the door now. I'll check when I get home, thanks.

Wow! I have a takedown H of F or whatever it is that only came with a 410 barrel. I'd love to have a 30-30 or 22 HP barrel for it. What all do you have in that stack?

Rick, I couldn’t find my calipers, I think I left them in the tool box on my dump trailer. I was pretty sure it was a lightweight barrel, looks like a pencil. But, it may be a medium, I’ll check ASAP
