Well not a big tacky trophy but I've got a big miley worth of meat headed to the freezer so I'm happy. My first year hunting heavy timber so it was quite different for a guy used to hunting open deserts of eastern Washington! I found this fella was palling around with a 2x2 and some does. As soon as I confirmed he was legal I took my first clear shot and he was drt. Then the work began.

I’d shoot it in a NY second !!
Love the dark gray. Like UR hat too. Makes me think of Ken Curtis “Festus” On Gunsmoke.
Now what put the DRT on him?
Yeah I killed a small WT today.... then went to work. grin.

Thanks fellas! I was hunting with my tired and true deer rifle. It's a beat up Remington 700ADL in .30-06 topped with a well used Leupold VariX-II 3x9 shooting Federal 165 grain BallisticTips. These have been great deer bulets for me in the past and didnt disappoint on this one. I really couldn't tell you how small of groups this rifle will shoot because I've never actually tried. Its sighted in 3" high at 100 and I've doped it out to past where I'm comfortable shooting at game. It never fails to hold zero year after year and continues to put effective killing shots on deer. Its ugly with the cheap plastic stock and rough factory finish and in a "boring" (I read that recently but it still my favorite) caliber. I've got much prettier, fancy and more accurate rifles but I've got so much history with this rifle I cant help but grab it first when deer are on the menu.
The hat... is a custom 100x hat my girlfriend got me. It's a loose copy of the hat worn by Kevin Costner in Open Range. Not a true Montana peak as there is a mule kick in the back so only 3 dents not 4. Hot as hell in the summer I still wear it almost year round to near every occasion.

Nice deer! Congratulations from one .30-06 user to another.

My favorite size Muley! Hard to find a better timber round than a 30-06, in fact it is hard to find a measurably better round than the 30-06 for hunting.
