Picked up a nice 999C at an estate sale yesterday. Has all the features on stock and recoil pad indicating 1985 manufacture. Murray's book states that the 99C had the .284 caliber discontinued in 1973. Is the discontinue date wrong?? SN E025xxx

By serial number that's September, 1982. And yes, that's long after the 284 had been discontinued in the catalogs (1972 was the last year it was catalogued). Never say never though...

What does the barrel address say?

And 1985 99C's didn't have a finger groove forearm. Does yours have the finger grooves or just a rounded forearm with wraparound checkering?

Didn't Numrich have some .284 barrels? Sounds like a rebarrel to me.

Does it have the factory stamping?

Could it be one of the rifles in a non-cataloged configuration that Savage made from parts in the warehouse in the mid-1980's?

The only unmarked Savage 99 barrels that I recall GPC/Numrich having were chambered in 22-250, 7mm-08, and 375 WIN.

That's about the same time they screwed the leftover 75th anniversary barrels on isn't it? They were selling anything they could to stay afloat. Wonder how many they did in .284??

Those octagon Cs were in 1977 seen in a SN range of about C380xxx to C400xxx +-

My data is not great on the later rifles but I have no .284's in my data after 1972. Would like to hear more about this rifle.

I was actually wondering if this wasn't one of your rechambered rifles you did back in the day.. but then I figured you wouldn't have done a standard 284.

Not one of mine.

Most of my 99C/CD rebarrel or rechamber jobs have been for 284 based wildcats.

My rebarrel jobs out in the world are a couple dozen lever safety 99Fs in 358 that came to me as 243s and 308s, plus a dozen or so 99Cs and 99Es that have 22" 99A 250-3000 barrels or the unmarked barrels from GPC in 22-250 and 7mm-08. I saw one of the 99Cs advertised as a non-cataloged special run rifle which, it was, just not a factory special run.

Stock: As follows:

Grooved forend with bottom cut checkering Pistol grip cut checkering. Pistol grip cap has brass medallion with Savage chief.
Monte carlo stock with soft rubber black pad with black spacer. Sling swivel studs Williams sliding ramp rear. Appears that stock has features of maybe a 1981. John Allen of Irma, Wi figures it might be put together out of in stock parts including the barrel as they neared the 1985 shutdown. Many posts to reply to, hope all read this one.

I think 260Remguy made a good point.

We have seen .358 rotor rifles with Model C wood but we have verified that there was an uncatalogued group produced in the B4xxxxx serial range. Given that we have not seen others .284's in the E serial range in your configuration I would think it was a special order or more likely a non-factory assembly.

Savage was making the 99C in 7mm08 at that time, so doing a 284 would have been easy if they had the magazines I think. Most guns in that range have white line spacers, but not all of them. There's a number of weird configurations that show up from the mid-80's. Case colored or blued lever?

If it's factory, it could be somebody at Savage made it up for themselves, or it was a special order that they decided to make (maybe a small batch of them?). Or a gift..

Here's a 1987 99C that I picked up as an example of oddities, and probably looks a lot like yours except for the recoil pad and lever. In 1987 99C's shouldn't have finger groove forearms and should have a recoil pad, but it apparently got a leftover stock/buttplate, and got put together with a blued lever that didn't happen until they started having 99C's made in Spain.

From what I've seen Medallions were on the pistol grip of some (all?) 1981 and 1982 99Cs. Whiteline spacers on those. I've seen a black spacer on a late D SN, but also white spacers on E SNs.

Medallions were on the pistol grips for all standard 99C's starting in 1980, possibly sometime in 1979 and all the way to the end.

Lever is case colored. Thanks from all of you on the 99C 284. Whatever it is, it was not a regular production for that year. Most likely as some of you say, made up of left overs. Never the less, I LIKE IT. Found another magazine yesterday on e-bay. Had to pay $40 per box for the factory .284 ammo and $65.00 per box for the 358 brush gun I found at the same estate sale. Will not shoot that one much. Ammo around here, especially handgun ammo is expensive and most stores are out of it. Even .308 Winchester and some other rifle ammo is gone. is hard to find.
