They were "the Pharisees" because they lost sight of the spirit of the laws. Just like the Pharisees of today. They place so much importance on the rules and regulations and rituals, but leave out some of the weightier things like love and compassion and grace.

And who are these Pharisees of today that you speak of? Those who champion religious rules and religious regulations as being more important than the people that these things were designed to serve and benefit.
