Tasers are not the magic wand the media makes them out to be. They were not the answer here. A 40 mm impact round was but isn’t something the average patrolman has access to in a hurry. Unfortunate outcome but a schizophrenic with a knife doesn’t usually end well, regardless of what the armchair quarterbacks say.

They needed another incident right before election day...

NOw I support Law enforcement but it has been a very long time since I have seen a police officer that did not have a taser... 2 cops... 1 guy with a knife... He had mental health issues... no offense, but I do see the department here not taking care of their officers as best they could. I bet the police that had to kill they guy wishes he atleast had the option of a taser

Tasers don't always work. Besides what the police use isn't the right question to ask. The right question to ask is why the idiot that got shot thought it was a good idea to pull a blade on someone packing a handgun. That's a sucker's bet and the sucker lost. Good Riddance.

This is why you shoot assailants that have knives. I think that the office top left photo was a martial arts expert.....and still got butchered! Any questions! memtb http://www.those-who-serve.com/tag/knife-wounds/

I don’t know why people assume a criminal IS going to listen to a cop. That’s about as smart as a criminal buying a gun legally. Not going to happen.
A taser in this instance may have taken care of it, two would have been even better.
Philly is getting what they ask for. Don’t they know what’s been going on for the past 6 months?

I saw video posted here about a big guy with a knife got tased to no effect, then stabbed a lady cop before getting capped by a couple other cops. She wasn’t harmed because of her vest but the BG died.
Obey lawful commands. Video interactions. Hold bad cops accountable. Problem solved.

I’d think a cop with a taser would deploy it a lot sooner than a firearm and they should be mounted on their pistols.

I bet the police that had to kill they guy wishes he atleast had the option of a taser No offense but you have no idea what you are talking about. In the dozens of incidents I have been involved with involving Tasers, they were only effective about 50% of the time. That is REAL WORLD. In this instance If it didn’t work there is a good chance you are getting cut or stabbed. You have to be within 25 feet for both Taser probes to realistically hit a person and in reality much closer. If both probes don’t hit and stick with a good connection it doesn’t work. Under stress there is a pretty good chance one or both are missing the person all together. A person with a knife can close that distance before Officers can act or retreat. That has been proven multiple times. There is no guarantee a back up Officer with lethal force is going to stop a knife wielding subject before he reaches the Officer with the Taser. People don’t always fall down immediately or stop what they are doing in real life as soon as they are shot. There is NO reason for an Officer to place the safety of an armed subject above his own. Him having mental health issues doesn’t change that. Those Officers could have used a taser and had it work out. It would have been because they got lucky, not because they used good tactics.

Why in the world do Philly police not have Tasers? Makes no sense I wouldn’t be to keen on tasing a charging man with a knife. Seems like a good way to get sliced and diced.

He didn't pull the knife on the cops, he had it out before they got there. The cops were called about a man with a knife acting irrationally. He was mentally ill. His mother had him by the arm in the video. If you look at all the people who get shot by the cops because they won't drop a knife, the common thread is mental illness. A garden variety criminal would drop the knife.
A wise man is frequently humbled.
