Can the barreled action of the youth model be dropped into a full-sized stock down the road or have they done anything with the barrel profile, etc., that would necessitate other alterations? Thanks!

The barrel contour is the same, just chopped off a few inches shorter. Just be sure the full-size stock isn't a Mountain Rifle model, as they have pencil-contour lightweight barrels. The youth 700 wears a standard 700 sporter contour at 20".

Thanks, JPro. I had a feeling they'd just cut most of the length from the back end but wanted to double check.

My kids' Ute 700s fit a standard channel adult stock with zero issues.

I think the 20" barrels handle perfect in stands/blinds/thick cover (and truck cabs for North Dakotans ...)

As others said I believe so. The one 700 youth in .243 I have experienced shot the tightest groups I’ve ever seen out of the box with Federal fusion. Literal bug holes at 100 yards.

It worked for my son's 7mm-08 youth model. I bought a takeoff wood stock off the 24HCF Classifieds.

Cabelas in Lacey, WA, had a blued one in 7-08 a couple of weekends ago. Looked like it was in good shape. I almost bought it myself then and I've been talking myself out of buying it every day since then.

Phone is (360) 252-3500 and they're open for three more hours.

This could be a stupid question (look whose asking it, after all!), but: would anything stop someone from snagging a cheap 700 SPS, a $40 youth stock, dropping it in, and chopping the barrel? Seems like the action and barrel channel would all be fine as long as it was SPS to SPS? (I'm not a Remington guy so this is relatively foreign to me!)

No problem at all. Only slightly complicated issue is if you're going ADL to a floor plate model, make sure to get the right triggerguard/floorplate assembly.

I am a big fan of swapping the trigger out for a Timney on the off chance of losing the Remington safety lottery.

RAR compact is good on the “cheap”. I ended up chopping my full size model to 18” and it’s a handy dandy little package.

The youth model is listed as an SPS but it has a floor plate... does that mean it's compatible with BDL stocks? (I've just finished reading about ADL vs. BDL vs. CDL vs. SPS. Yeesh. I think I made it worse.)

A 700 SPS barreled action will drop into any 700 stock with the same action length and that is inletted for BDL style bottom metal. It will also drop into a stock that is inletted for a detachable magazine style 700, but the aesthetics aren't quite as nice.

Yep, got one in safe. Still have the youth stock for grandkids that are coming up. Bought the full size one here on the fire, fit snug as a bug.

Yes. I took my son's .243 youth SPS and dropped it into a wood BDL stock I snagged here on the classifieds. Worked out perfecto.
