What is the twist on these original military barrels? My Speer manual #9 says 1:7.5 but I don't know what model that is. Thanks

According to "Mauser Bolt Rifles" by Ludwig Olsen, the M94 has a 17.71" barrel length with a 1 in 7.87" right hand twist. The M96 has a 29.10" barrel and 1 in 7.87" right hand twist. the M38 is a 23.6" barrel with a 1 in 7.87" right hand. I am not certain how accurate these rates are. I only referenced one book. Hope this helps out!

The original rate of twist for M96 , M41 , M38 & M94 barrels were one turn in 200 m/m ( 7.87" ) .

The CG63 barrels ( 6.5 m/m ) were made with a twist rate of one turn in 220 m/m ( 8.660" )

WHAT?? Now you tell me..I couldn't afford a CG-63..so reading stock disc's I picked the best of 30 '96's and proceeded to build a homemade version, a great shooter yes, but never a true champion that I hoped for.

Well this is a fine pickle we're in, should'a listened to Joe McCarthy and George Orwell I guess.

sixfive;
Good evening to you sir, I hope the day treated you acceptably and this finds you well.

Thanks for giving the OP the answer out of the Olsen book, it's a wonderful reference manual for sure on most all things Mauser.

If you're into Swedes in particular the book, "The Swedish Mauser Rifles" by Steve Kehaya and Joe Poyer is quite good too as well. Here's a link, though it is Amazon for which I apologize.

Here's an Abebooks link!

Lastly, our eldest daughter shoots a 1903 vintage Carl Gustav Swede and my walking around rifle is a between the wars commercial roll marked 98 Mauser that I had a smith fit a near new 96/38 barrel onto and both of them measure at 1:7.75" as close as I'm able to tell.

They are a deep groove barrel too and as such seem to really like monometal bullets if one wants that sort of thing for hunting.

Hopefully that helped as well. All the best to you all this fall.

Dwayne

I very much enjoy sporting arms of Scandinavia. I did start out more into the Swedish military Mausers though. I would call attention to "Crown Jewels-The Mauser in Sweden: A Century of Accuracy and Precision" by Dana Jones for a good read. It is a very good reference book for the Military Swedes as well.

I also feel that "Crown Jewels" by Dana Jones is an excellent reference for original military spec as well as CG/63, sniper, and other variations.

...when heading out I always seem to grab a M70 in 6.5x55, but this reminds me I really need to hunt a Carl Gustav sporter...
