Heading up to open Camp Isabella in the morning. No reports from camp this year as the hot spot died.
Good luck and good hunting to all.

Considering about 1/3 of the team is skipping it to go hunting, I doubt it. Dad used to call me in to school with an acute case of Buck Fever. My football coach loved it, as he was a hunter too. My high school principal was so uptight you couldn't have driven a pin up his arse with a sledgehammer. He called certain parents (mine included) every year about the importance of kids being in school. Dad had a little come to Jesus with him junior year and pointed out that I was not a failing student, and would be deer hunting. The principal failed to see the humor in that, but I didn't get "the call" senior year!

Good luck to all the Minnesota boys next week. Nothing like hunting deer in shorts and flip flops! This will be my last hunt with my son for a while. He ships out for the Air Force on December 8th and we won't see him for quite some time. Speaking of which, I'd like to give him a good coffee table book on the history of the Air Force. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Good luck and good hunting to all. Good luck to you and your crew TJAY. I have no doubt you'll get a couple good ones. But you might have to wait until Mother Nature turns down the thermostat a bit.

But I did say he made the commitment to the team to play, so he gets to play. Unless they make a long playoff run in a normal year, they don't usually play during deer season. "Lucky" for him, when we go to WI the week of Thanksgiving, he'll be able to do school work from the cabin we rent. I find more humor in it than he does.

Good luck to all you Manysoda fellers this weekend! Bring back deer, stories, and pictures.
Dave, that buck must be a direct descendent of ol' Forky Toes, which means he has skills. It's going to take a well coordinated attack, bringing all available assets to bear to affect a complete capitulation of this ten pointed adversary. This is not a task for any ordinary group, however, I think the Chickenbuck elite Special Forces Deer Eradication Unit is up to the job. God, Country, and Freezer is their battle cry.
Michigan is poised to have an all-out slaughter of our herd. Last year 522,000 deer licenses were sold. This year we're north of 800,000 and the season doesn't start for 10 days. Each of those 800K deer combo licenses is also a doe permit because it brings in $$ for the DNR who could care less about deer mgmt during COVID. So come the 15th, I'll be the guy hunkered down in a foxhole blind behind the sand bags wearing complete blaze orange Kevlar when the shooting starts.
Shoot straight and often everyone.

Palace in the Popple
Written by George Augustus "Gus" Bixby, ca. 1905
Gus and Rob Bixby, lived in Trego, Gus having been born in St Croix County in August 1880, and died in Trego in 1969. Rob, born 1884, died in Trego in 1968. They were a couple of old bachelors that loved the great outdoors. Apparently Gus also loved reading poetry...and he dabbled at writing it, too. Here is a poem he wrote about their hunting shack north of Trego.
Palace in the Popple
It's a smokey raunchy boar's nest, with an unswept drafty floor, And pillow ticking curtains, with knife scars on the floor.
The smell of a pine knot fire, from a stovepipe that's come loose, Mingles sweetly with the bootgrease, and the copenhagen snoose.
There are workworn .30-.30's with battered steel stocks, And drying lines of longjohns, and of steaming pungent socks.
There's a table for the bloody four, and their game of two card draw, And there's deep and dreamless sleeping, on bunkticks filled with straw.
Ed and Lawrence, by the stove, their gun talk loud and hot, And Rob, has drawn a pain of kings, and raking in the pot.
Harvey's drafted again as cook, he's peeling spuds for stew, While Gus, wanders in baggy pants, receiting Dan McGrew.
Nowhere on earth is fire so warm, nor coffee so infernal, Or whiskers stiff or jokes so rich nor hope blooms so eternal.
A man can live for a solid week, in the same old underbritches, He can walk like a man, spit where he wants, and scratch himself where he itches
I tell you boys there's no place else, where I'd rather be come Fall, Where I eat like a bear and sing like a wolf, And feel like I'm Bull Pine tall.
In that raunchy cabin out in the bush, in the land of the Raven n Loon, With a tracking snow lying new to the ground, at the end of the rutting moon.
George Augustus (Gus) Bixby Circa 1905
