Recently aquired a model 40 super sporter in 30-06. I had some feeding problems in the beginning that were solved with magazine modifications. The old girl shoots sweet but has never been drilled for a scope, nor do I desire to. So my question would be what are your recommendations for a mount. I have looked at Pearson's dovetail but I am afraid the 06' recoil may be too stiff.

Once upon a time., I had one that had a receiver sight on it.
That was a great setup

Yeah, the sight Lyman made for them was a nice simple rugged sight. I gave my only 40, a. 300, to my BIL and it had one of those sights. 30 years now and I know for a fact he hasn't touched the sight and has killed a pile of deer with it- and is still working on only the second box of cartridges. Yeah, he's one of those guys....

Redfield also made a "hunter" sight in the 102 series. The Lyman 45 mentioned above comes up on eBay on a fairly regular basis.

You will have to relieve a notch out of the back left corner of the stock for the sight to fit. However, its not too complicated of a project, just take caution to not take too much wood out from below the sight base. Otherwise you will have a gap at the bottom.
