Son has a rem 742 auto in 243 and lost the clip. I found an old rem 742 clip marked 6mm. I have heard they are the same round except for the bbl twist. He headed out to hunt, and don't have time to fire for function. Will the 6mm clip work with 243 ammo?

I don't believe so.

No, the 243 is based on the 308 case. The 6mm is based on the 7x57 case

6mm Remington is based on the 7x57 case whereas the .243 is based on the .308. A .243 mag might work, then again maybe not. Likewise, a 30-06 mag might too. Either might work and either might work with a little tweaking. Or maybe none of them will work at all.

If you're refering to a 6mm Remington it has a longer case than a 243 Winchester.
You might try running a magazine full of 243 W. thru it to see if they will feed properly...........

Whoops. I was thinking about the 244 and the 6mm. I'll get the clip out to him and hope he gets time to check it out. Thanks

1. The cases are different. The 6mm Rem is the same as the 244 Rem.
2. It's a magazine, not a clip.
3. Yes, the magazines are the same.

The difference between the 244 and the 6mm Remington is not in the cartridge. The case dimensions for the cartridge fitting both rifles are exactly the same - what we now know as the 6mm Rem, based on the 257 Roberts case.

When the 243 Win (based on the popular and accurate 308 parent case) came out, Remington wanted to get in on the varmint/deer cartridge rage that was going on then. Remington came out with the 244 Remington.

The 243 Win was chambered in rifles with a 1:10 twist, allowing the use of bullet weights > 90 gr. This made the 243 Win a viable varmint AND deer cartridge.

The 244 Remington was chambered in rifles with a 1:12 twist...which would stabilize varmint weight bullets, but would not stabilize bullets of > 90gr in weight.

In short - the 243 Win actually could do dual duty. The 244 Rem, while it was advertised to be able to do dual duty, could not do this in real life.

That's the difference between the 244 Remington and the 6mm Remington.

Hope this helps.

No, they are not interchangeable.

Mag should work as most of the SA cartridges use the same mags.

It should work. According to this photo, the .308 Win., 6mm Rem, and .243 Win all take the same magazine.

Since the case gained an extra 6mm over a .243 or .308.

A 308 magazine might work. They are the same family and have similar dimensions.
