Thoughts on the Ruger No 1 in 460 as a 200yd compact stalking rifle for deer/hogs?

gotta have a little recoil to make you feel alive!
why? not one single good reason...but its interesting and different. I load my 45-70's UP the 460 would be a milder more efficient option

Gives you three guns in one. You can shoot 460 S&W, drop down a little to 454 Casull, or down to 45 Colt. Kinda like a big brother to my 357 Remington Maximum. I can also use 357 Magnum and 38 Special.

As in 460 Bee or 460 S&W?

460 S&W is a factory chambering, FWIW. Too bad the .460 S&W revolvers are such behemoths smile

45+P is about 44 magnum territory and you can use that in it. A very versatile rifle. I have one but haven't fired it yet.

Consider a 450/400 3 inch. I have one and it's a very versatile rifle.

Limited experience with the .460 S & W in carbine so far, but based on shooting an Encore with the 20" Katahdin barrel and 200 gr bullets I think 200 yards would be stretching it. You would need a rangefinder and tape a trajectory chart to the stock to hold correctly for the longer shots. 150 yds shouldn't be a problem.

Barnes offers a .451 caliber 275 gr monolithic spire point which I have not been able to try yet. Published hotter loads with that bullet might shoot flat enoug for 200yd. shots.

IF available, go for a longer barrel without a muzzle brake. Few more fps and less need for ear protection when easing through the woods looking/listening for game.
