I have Shooter on my phone. I was wondering, since I use Reloader 22 and IMR 4831, just how accurate is the Powder Temp part of the program. Anybody have any experience with that app?

No, but I like the app. If you true your load against Shooter data, powder differences should not matter, unless temperature becomes a factor and the powder performs differently. I'm sure the app calculates to factor in temperature, but don't think it is calculating for changes on powder performance, just the usual ballistic inputs. It just uses velocity, with no regard to powder brand that I am aware of.

I think it is necessary to true your load in known conditions, and compare to results given by Shooter. Once any variance is programmed into the calcs, Shooter becomes very accurate IMO. It has been common for me to have correct inputs in Shooter but still have to factor in a slight variance, which is learned by shooting and then applied as an adjustment to the load. Shooter is built to accommodate this. Of course, at ranges less than 500 yards, a variance may not be noticeable. Paying 10$ for the Shooter App is one of the smartest things I ever did.

This is what "truing load" looks like for me - I shoot a steel plate at 500 yards, using the Shooter data, with inputs specific to conditions. If I need a couple more clicks to center punch the target, that will be noted. Then repeat same on a different day. If Shooter needs another click to hit at point of aim, I program that variance into the calcs for that load. This works well. Note -- I don't test windage that way, because it is so easy to make an error there in the field. If testing shows that windage is constantly a problem, I take that on as an individual project. For elevation, this has worked well for me.

My fix for windage is to try not to shoot long when hunting smile

Idahobob,

I came across this list a number of years back (see below). I have used it as well as added a few myself when I discovered them elsewhere. It seems be somewhat accurate with the powders I use. It is best to let your rifle and ammo soak for hours in the temps you plan on shooting in, which to me, means leaving them in my locked truck overnight before heading out in the morning to catch the best/lightest winds. Don't expect the best results if your rifle is warm, having just been pulled from your warm house and left in a warm truck cab before you go shoot; even if the ammo was left in the truck overnight. At the ballistic lab I work for we bring our powder to a temperature controlled storage facility for at least 24 hours before it is brought into our building to be used. When checking the ammo we manuf we soak in cold and hot temps for 24 hour before "temp" testing it.

I recently did some testing with my 22LR ammo and rifle. I would store the rifle and ammo in our ballistic gel refrigerator during most of my 10 hour shift, pulling them out and immediately shooting them. Temp was 40 deg F. I had already shot some velocities at the beginning of the shift and was able to compare the two; 72 F vs 40 F. It gave me a good number to input into the Shooter app. The feature works quite well when the Shooter app Powder Temperature feature auto populates every time; some times it does not, so get used to double checking it before you go to the dope page. If it does not auto populate, simply uncheck and recheck the "Enable" box. I have an email into Sean to see what's up.

If you want to verify a powder, whether it's on the below list or not, load up a supply of ammo, test some of it, now, during the winter months, then save the rest to test this coming Summer. Then input the number into Shooter and it will automatically give an Adjusted Velocity in the Powder Temperature section. Compare that with your chronographed load. What I have noticed, at least with 22LR, is the velocity increases/decreases are not linear. I'm still testing my theory. It seems I was getting 1 fps/1 deg change in the warmer months but less in the colder months. The jury is still out.

My experience is that velocity variation per degree of temperature change of most powders depends on the application and load.
