I don't like underarmor. At least the spandex kind. Maybe they have other stuff now.I hate anything tight to my skin as it causes beals. I shave most of legs in the winter to prevent it from happening.
I have a set of light, medium and heavy stuff I got from cabelas. Some kind of cotton/synthetic mix that fits but is not skin tight. The heavy layer is pleated and very warm.

When needed i wear a synthetic top i got from walmart,it's like underarmor.
Legs i have a pair of jeans that are flannel lined.

Costco has some base layers that I like called 32 Fahrenheit.iirc
A 2 pack of tops or 2 pack of bottoms for $15.

Light weight silk;
Light, medium, heavy, artic weight synthetic/polyester;
Medium weight merino wool.
Have them them all and use them all depending on weather and my level of activity. Often wear a lighter top than bottom layer.
No cotton!
Years ago had some duofolds that the inner layer was polypro with a wool outer layer, they were great. Wore them out and have never seen them again .

Don't give up on Under Armor. I have several sets that I layer with. The lightweight give me the most options with goretex pants.
