to buy a gun often requires shipping costs.
a handgun is a different beast than a long gun.
and then there's the FFL requirement or detail to fulfill.
so, for discussion who pays the costs of the transfer?
is it the seller or is it the buyer? just asking.
costs are costs and somebody always pays.
*if* i wanted to sell a gun, how to maximize profits?
*IF* i wanted to buy a gun, then how to minimize costs?
yes, this has been discussed ad infinitum, but buyers & sellers come and go.

i just wish things could be more siimple.
but maybe they;'re already as simple as possible?
shipping has become a very important part of the price of transfer.
i mean, people in the middle help get it done for sure.
i'm seen prices on the rack as same as the shipped & delivered price.
no argument from me. ask what you want. let the buyer beware.
i'm trying to understand what part of the cost of a gun is related to shipping.

Gus- That is simply false. I guarantee if you look at the cost of shipping a gun compared to 40 years ago via EQUAL METHODS (ie Regular Ground transport) that when adjusted for inflation ,the cost of labor and fuel , shipping, is no larger a total percentage of most gun transactions.than it ever was. U The price of EVERYTHING has gone up. The only added expense over the last 30 years is the cost of the transfer background check fee.. Basically paying a dealer and /or the Government for the "honor" of having our Second Ammendment rights violated every time we buy a gun from a dealer.

Maximimize profits?
Do as businesses do.
Shipping and handling fees.
2 or 3 times actual cost.
Daughter just bought a tube of makeup. $8
$6 to mail it.
Parents who say they have good kids..Usually don't!

Unless you have an FFL, shipping a handgun is a PIA and expensive. As a non FFL holder, UPS seems to be the most cost effective but it's hit or miss whether the morons behind the counter think they can even ship it. Half of them are convinced that you need an FFL to ship it, if they think they can ship it at all.
And if you want to ship it USPS via an FFL holder, seems like they're becoming less and less interested in doing so. Too much hassle for the payout. And once you as the shipper factor in the FFL holders fee... you're back at about what UPS charges.

mailing a letter in 1860 via pony express was 5.00. I just mailed a shotgun to NC for 47 bucks.

Runs about $100 to do a long gun transfer in CA. I'm sure it costs more for handguns. Those costs tend to keep me from buying anything just out of principal. Fuggin crooks everywhere anymore.

Gus: I much prefer (and have for many decades!) to buy firearms for my arsenal and collection face to face - no paper work required, no sales tax required, no background check required, no insurance required, no F.F.L. fees required - just like when I buy a Bible and/or a printing press! Did so just today in fact. Get my drift? Long live the Second Amendment! Hold into the wind VarmintGuy

Handguns are cheaper to ship, because they are smaller and weigh less.

Handguns can't go USPS. Have to go FEDEX or UPS. normally second day. I don't have an FFL, so.. At least that is what i have had to do. Yes the box is smaller and the weight is less but can't go ground/standard shipping.
