Okay, the recent barrel band saddle ring carbine brought up the issue of early barrel addresses. It had one that hadn't been seen so early. So, here's a list of early barrel addresses. 1C is Murray's "Style 1". If anybody has early rifles (1899 - 1904'ish) with any of these, would you mind sharing which one it is and the first 3 or 4 digits of the serial number? Or if you have another one that's not in the list. Thank you.. PS: Murray's Style 2 address loses the curlicues and seems to come out in the late 3x.xxx range. Feel free to include that as well for early rifles. Style 2 address is: MANUFACTURED BY THE SAVAGE ARMS COMPANY, UTICA, N.Y. U.S.A. PATENTED FEBRUARY 7, 1893, JULY 25, 1893, OCTOBER 3, 1899

I would love to do this, but that is a considerable amount of work pulling safes apart. Do you have this info in your records? I've said it before but I need much better records of the identifying characteristics not just serial number, model, and condition.

Not asking anybody to go crazy.. I've got a few guns in the back of safes I haven't pulled out.
If you have access to anything, just asking for data.
Nowadays I try to take pictures of every rifle including barrel address with cell phone and save it on my computers/cloud. On guns I bought early on, I didn't.

Well I'm thoroughly confused. What are we trying to accomplish?
Do we know the s.n. for the FB SRC?

We're trying to figure out serial number ranges for early barrel addresses, when they start and stop. The early 1899F with barrel band is the first 1B serial number above, 10.5xx. It prompted this, because it's so much earlier than the few other samples of 1B that we have seen. Once we nail this down, we'll probably start on later barrel addresses. So if you get your guns out, take notes on all of them. Thanks, Polecat!

SN 24585 looks like 1B but says cal 30 is an 1899C in 30-30 Yes, the SAV 30 / 30-30 rifles will say CAL 30 in the barrel address rather than CAL 303. All good. Thanks!

Here is what i've got. Not going to use the 1, 2, etc. short rifle 10.735 three dots and curlicues short rifle 15.737, no dots, but has curlicues 21.196 no dots, no curlicues. 1899B, F engraved, letter shows it was produced in 1902, but wasn't shipped until 1906, During the time it was at the factory the barrel was changed from 30-30 Half octagon to 303 octagon. So this barrel could be as late as 1906. 1899A 24.411, no dots, but has curlicues 1899 34.063 no dots, but has curlicues 1899 short rifle, 37.710 no dots, but has curlicues 1899 SRC, 41.885 no dots or curlicues

The blue lines could be 1B or 1C, would need to know if the Oct 3, 1899 date was there. Or whether patented was spelled out or abrreviated. F engraved.. whoof. #10.940 is 1a, full octagon barrel Thank you, sir. The 10.xxx range has been consistent with 2 exceptions and you're definitely near the end of it.
