I listen to tunes when , God forbid , I am working nights . When we moved to south Chicago as a kid it was 89 WLS, Chicago.....Weather, or Super CFL! When in the mountains it was Lewis and Floorwax, if we had reception!

The Genesis Network, rbn, and half a dozen conservative shows on short wave until this year. Now I'm devoted to health and natural medicine classes online.
One, completely agree about the preponderance of obnoxious commercials, particularly those laced with subtle sirens, honks, & crashes to jolt the listener into attentiveness.
Two, rarely listen anymore; has become my quiet time i guess. In the low mountainous area here, cell and sirius are touch n go, largely gone. There are three, THREE, religious talk stations droning on, one of whom also hosts some locally dj’d jazz and classical, but hard to catch/irregular. Just kinda gave up. East and west of here are fairly contemporary content stations commensurate with their market size, but, am almost broke of the habit/desire by now regardless.
