I've had a 30-338, a 416 Taylor, a 224 Durham Jet ,a 30BR, and a Contenders in 375JDJ. They were fun and I learned more about reloading with the oddball cartridge than I would have with only standard cartridges.

Both Savage lever action rifles. I have not chronographed either, but am currently shooting 20 grains of RL7 with a 30 grain Nagel in the .17. Not looking to smoke the barrel in 400 rounds by going 5K fps.

I've read it could be pushed to that, but I do not want to do that. I just wanted a Savage 99 based .17 to hunt coyotes with. I needed a parent cartridge to fit the Savages .473 size bolt face that could be made to cycle through the Savage action.

A few to keep me busy at the loading bench from time to time: 257 RAI 6.5-284 (before it was SAAMId and now) 6.5 Gibbs 6.5 MAN (performance like the 6.5-300 Wby from a modified 300 Win Mag case) 30 Herrett 357 Herrett 35 Whelen (before it was a Rem) 358 MAN (performance like the 358 Norma Wby from a modified 300 Win Mag case) 404-375 Ruger (duplicates 416 Rem Mag, 416 Rigby & 404 Jeffery modern loads from a 375 Ruger case)
Think that’s enough for a while, but I’ve enjoyed designing and developing the MANs and shooting them all. It’s been a hoot and they’ve taught me quite a bit.

What kind of velocity are you getting with that 6.5 Gibbs? Been kicking around the idea of building one for a while.

About the only one I have a use for is the 20 practical. It's extremely easy to make from 223 brass and it's a significant performance jump over the 223 itself.
I've tried: .17 Ackley Hornet .22 Long Snapper .22 K-Hornet 6x47 .22-30-30 Ackley Improved .250 Ackley Improved .25-06 when it was a wildcat 7mm TCU ,338-06 when it was a wildcat .35 Whelen when it was a wildcat .35 Whelen Ackley Improved .375 Whelen Improved .411 Hawk
maybe others. Still have a couple of .25-06s. Don't miss any of the rest.

Of the above it was the 6mm/06 that went on and on. I have had it in all rifles configurations including bench style guns. It became a bit of a cult calibre in parts of Australia. It loads down real well. From memory we used Varget and also another Australian powder with a burn rate like 3031 and loads were in the 40 grain area and bullets from 68 grains to 75 grains. The reduced loads were for week long spot light shooting and to drop the muzzle blast.
