Just heard this morning.. .Dammit.. One of the very best - certainly the best test pilot and pioneer in the quest to pass the speed of sound.. If you ever get a chance, find and read the book "Yeager"... Paperback. I still have my copy from probably 25-30 years ago and I now intend to read it again this week.. One helluva man, Mr. Yeager... RIP indeed..

Met and talked with him a number of times. Crusty dude that had the swagger of brass rhino balls. Cocksure and hyper competitive, even in candid conversation. Jorge used to see him at DSC every year and they'd talk trash. Yeager would denigrate him as a Navy flier and Jorge would ask him "How many night traps do you have, General?" Yeager would smile and say "I've got a few.." Yeager's wife was interviewed back after "The Right Stuff" movie came out, and Glynis would say that the Chuck Yeager we see now is a much more polished and sophisticated version than the man she initially married, who by all accounts was a serious WV hillbilly with an indecipherable twang to his accent. Glynis said the Air Force rounded off the worst of the sharp edges. To do what he did in his career, from Ace in a Day to all that X- flight stuff required self confidence that oozed from your pores. Yeager had it and I only met him in his later years. My wife still thinks he's a jerk because one year I saw him and walking together at the convention I asked for a photo together and in true Yeager form he barked 'Well, hurry the hell up!" Wife thought that that was rude.  She doesn't get that Chuck Yeager was the ultimate macho man that would not be out done at anything. He still elk hunted on horseback every year into his 90's. I've heard stories about Yeager in elk camp giving city boys half his age crap because they were fat and out of shape and couldn't hack it.
