This Model 70 Classic Featherweight 280 Rem has taken a bunch of deer. This is the latest one. I find it to be an ideal deer rifle in every aspect.
It is topped with a Leupold Vari-x3 2.5-8. My preferred load is is 51 grains of IMR 4350 and a Sierra 140 grain Game King. Works every time.

Thanks.

It was probably 30 years ago at a gun show in Cave City, Kentucky. I was a broke teenager at this guy's table drooling over the new featherweight with the pre 64 claw extractor in the Winchester box. I've no idea what price was on it, but the guy pressed me several times to make him an offer. I told him $400 just so he'd stop asking. I'll be danged if he didn't take it! He surely had more than that in it. You just never know.

My favorite caliber!

Congrats on the buck and a fine rifle.

Mine sits in a McMillan Edge with Talley LW.

That buck has some thick bases. Nice deer and nice rifle.
Love the story! I bet you'll never sell that rifle.

Congratulations Greg,

Very nice deer, and of course it never gets old seeing a Classic Featherweight posed like that!

I see deer like that down in middle TN, but never while we're hunting ; - (

I ran over one about that size on the way to go hunting back during muzzleloader season.

I have that very same rifle except mine currently wear a 3.5-10x VX -3. Although the 2.5-8x is well represented on many of my other rifles. Been hunting with it some this fall too, but no luck yet.

I went through a spell of about 10 or 12 years a while back that I thought the only thing fit to shoot at a deer was a 280 Remington. I had several of them and as I recall my favorite load was similar to yours. 52.5 grains of IMR 4350 over a 140 grain NP. But after a while I got interested in other things and all the 280's went away. Just picked up this Featherweight about a year ago in the classifieds and I think I'm falling in love with the 280 again.

Very nice deer by the way and a fine rife.

Good for you for being so generous to your sons in law, and bring new blood into the sport!
