Question for the 1911 gurus:
The subject is full-size frame .45 ACP magazines, 7-round, and 8-round. It seems a pretty well regarded, versatile, "general use" magazine is the Check-Mate with "Hybrid" feed lips. My most recent 1911 .45 is a Ruger, Commander size, steel frame. The two factory supplied 7-round magazines, and two other 8-round Ruger magazines given to me by a friend, appear to be supplied by Check-Mate. All four of these magazines appear to have the "Wadcutter" feed lips.
Does anyone know why Ruger supplies magazines with Wadcutter feed lips as opposed to Hybrid feed lips, when the consensus seems to be the Hybrid are more versatile?
Thanks in advance for any replies, Gun Doc

^^^^^^^^^^^ Yeah, what he said.
I have an SR 1911, too, and happily enough, it works flawlessly (so far, anyway) with the Wilsons and Chip McCormick Shooting Star magazines I've had for decades.
If they work, be happy and use them. Why worry about stuff that doesn't matter?

So back in the days before everything was CNC machined, the type of feed lips sometimes mattered...SOMETIMES. Today, it RARELY matters. The geeks will obsess over every little detail, but after working on 1911's for over 30 years, my opinion on the matter is; it just doesn't matter anymore...until it does.
You can find the what's and why's out there on the interwebs; I'm surely not going to type a book on the why's of wadcutter release vs taper. If you want to obsess over such details, be my guest.
What I have come to realize is. These days it's hard to find truly bad magazines. If the magazine works, just run it.
As for why Ruger goes for the early vs. late release...I doubt they even care. Their pistol is going to work fine with either magazine. So they picked a good magazine that worked in their guns, that they could purchase at a good price point (speculation on my part).

The 7 round Ruger mag has worked fine; the 8 rounders jam the top round if loaded with 8 rounds, works fine if there are on 7 rounds in.
Sample of one gun, one mag each version that came with the gun.
Wilson 8 rounders & Tripp 7 rounders work fine, as they do in all other guns.

...As for why Ruger goes for the early vs. late release...I doubt they even care. Their pistol is going to work fine with either magazine... Can't argue with that. Looking closer at my Ruger mags (which I had initially thought resembled Checkmates), the 7-round mag looks wadcutter-ish, and the 8-rounder looks hybrid-ish. But neither are identical to my Checkmate hybrids. Are they really made by Checkmate? Anyway....they both work perfectly in my SR1911, as do my Checkmates, Colts, and even the Novaks.
Lunatic fringe....we all know you're out there.
