Thinking about putting this scope on a mountain rifle. The gun is a Montana XAR in 308. The other choice would be a Swaro Z3 but I dont need 10 power. Any opinions on the leupold, or another scope I should be considering?

Have a Leupold VX-3i 2.5-8x36mm on a M70 EW/SS in .270 WIN.

No complaints.

I have a few of the Leupolds in that size and love them. Much smaller than a 3-9x40 which is what I like. If you like the Swaro, maybe consider the 3-9x36 instead. I have two of them as well.

I just put one on my Kimber Montana in 270 win. It was a tight fit on the long action. Had it at the range yesterday, no complaints.

Best Leupold made
VX3i 2.5-8 x 36 if it doesn't have the worthless plex what ever they call it - covers up half the target to damn wide - now if you have the Boone and Crockett on it never sell it, best they ever made and you can't get them any more...

I have several VX3i 2.5-8x36 and a few Swaro Z3 3-9x36 scopes....The Z3 has better glass and tracks a little better (not much better) but if your looking for the best bang for your buck in this size class I dont know of a better scope than the VX3i 2.5-8x36...The Meopta Meopro 3-9x40 is an excellent scope, (basically a Zeiss Conquest) but it is a much bigger, bulkier scope and does not have the sleek lines that the Leupold or Swaro has.....Good luck ...Hb

I too like the 2.5-8x36. I wish I could get the reticle changed though, not a fan of regular duplex. Anyone have insight on whether custom shop is ever coming back?

I have a nice 2.5x8 VX3i from the custom shop with parallax reset and the heavy duplex reticle.

I have a 2.5x8 on my Rem 760 and Ruger Hawkeye ultralight 7mm-08 and are a good fit. I like them.

SpiritWalker: I am not trying to be a "contrary" here but if I recall correctly I bought my first Leupold scope with the "Du-Plex" reticle back in 1963 or so.
And since the fine folks at Leupold invented and registered that Du-Plex reticle style it has been their number one seller for 58 years or now!
I know some people prefer other reticles for different usages but I have never heard ANYONE try to besmirch and deride that reticle style!
Until you!
In my opinion the Leupold Du-Plex is THE most copied and all around useful reticle style there is.
In fact my Leupold 2.5x8 variable scopes all have Du-Plex reticles - they work wonderfully well for me.
I have, literally, many dozens of Leupold scopes with Du-Plex reticles on Big Game and Varmint Rifles and have used them without complaint for well over half a century now.
Puzzled by your innuendo.

Swarovski makes a z3 3-9x36 that would be comparable. Their #4 reticle is aweosme

I was thinking Swaro 3-9×36 as well. Tube mounting length is better/more forgiving and its still a nice and light scope with better glass than the Leopold. Also the new styling of the vx3i is tacky.

One of the things I like about the Leupold VX-3i 2.5-8x36mm - is that, if you set the zoom to the middle, knob TDC (~ 5x)?

...the point-to-point on the fine crosshair subtends 10 MOA.

Very quick and handy for hold corrections.

Yes. Both mine have the #4 reticle even though a duplex model is available here also. I really like the #4 style reticle. Without the thick upper post the view through the scope seems to open up more. I'd probably pick this reticle if it was optioned as standard in a Leupold.

I have a VX3i listed for sale. It’s more magnification that you’re looking at: 4.5-14x50. It’s the 30mm model and Leupold replaced the standard turrets with M1 turrets and the reticle is the TMOA. I’m asking $70”, but open to offers.
