Hello All!

I have an older 870 Magnum for which I’m struggling to determine manufacture year. Does anyone have some insights?

Remington 870 Magnum, 12 gauge
barrel codes: LG M
receiver serial number: W430217M

It was bought used in early-to-mid 1980’s at a gun shop, so no clue if barrel is an original match to rest of shotgun or not.

Thanks!

Looks to me like 1960, but could also possibly be 1986?

Is it a plain or vent rib barrel? And what length?

Longarm - I agree, based upon the letter codes I’ve found online.
1960 seems too early by the looks of the barrel, but who knows...

The barrel is 28 inch, rem-choke threaded, plain (not vented)

Any idea if the W prefix on receiver serial number corresponds to a year?

Thanks

Remington did not introduce Rem-chokes till the mid 1980's. I am pretty sure they quit making plain barrels long before then.

Here are pics. Seems like it’s probably a 1986 manufacture year, based upon the barrel rem-choke insights and the LG barrel code.

Thoughts, after seeing pics?

Thanks

The barrel in the pictures is ribbed.

Post 80's gun it has cut checkering and the later roll stamp on the left side of the receiver.

Thank you mag410..... I initially misunderstood the plain vs. vent rib.

So 1986 adds-up to you, by barrel code and appearance?

LG looks like February 1986 to me.

G was used as the year of assembly code in 1960, 1986, and 2012.
