Since the previous owner was into stashing firearms. Was he an old guy who mighta had memory problems ??? Or dead and you bought the property from people who inherited it???
Either way.... You might wanna spend some time metal detecting that place. Conspicuous or innocuous landmarks Lone trees. Rises on ground. Areas around buildings.
To delibrately hide guns like that and you discover em. Probably other stuff around the place to be found no one had any idea of when you bought the place. PS- Look for markers on trees, too. What would be an example of markers on trees. I'm new to treasure hunting. lol. Painted nails, inscribed railroad ties, carvings on the trees, painted symbols, pieces of imbedded chains, any kind of directional symbol.

Congrats! Oh, along with the cow bones and antlers i mentioned, I forgot the paint cans in the well house that match some of the rooms. And a few cords of firewood I insisted stay with the place as we were buying in November and I didn't want to be looking for firewood and paying winter prices. But, I didn't find any guns wrapped up in that firewood pile, or stashed behind the pressure tank in the well house. C'mon Kingie, let's see what else was in there, down in that lower right corner.

I’m gonna guess that what appears to be a handgun is a Triple Lock.

Okay so we got one vote for a Smith Triple Lock, and one for a Python. Anybody else want to give it a shot? We should start a pool

given the provenance, I'm going with an H&R 9 shot double action .22lr
added: if it is a Colt New Service in 44-40, I'll be happy for you.
