I know it's probably been brought up before but I'm too lazy to search. I'm getting chains for the front wheels only on my Ram 2500 diesel. I don't think I'll use them much but I want to be prepared for when I ski and when I'm offroad hunting. Any suggestions or ones to avoid?

Find a place that makes them for real trucks, chain not cable.
Get them made.

Find some old truck chains, cut them to fit.
Both criss links and msin chains.

Ice chains are a bit lighter, and have teeth to bite,
But they are lighter, so not as tough and not as good in mud.

Idaho?
Know anyone who works any of the passes that would require
chains? Bet they either have a bunch of broken ones they have
picked up, or know who does.

Keep in mind what year your truck is. You can't put chains on the front of the newer ones because of all the electronic crap they put on them now.

V bar are the best, dont cheap out or you will be sorry. A good set up here is around 2-300 bucks. If you have a cheap set and you get stuck and they break, then you are really in trouble. This almost cost me my life once.
I also bring a pair of bolt cutters with me in case they break and get wrapped around my axles, before they start ripping break lines off.
I put chains on everyday, I like putting them on the back wheels because the weight over the front wheels helps without the chains. All four wheels is the best, but you gotta be in some serious stuff before you put four on, I put four on if I have any doubt.
I put them on the front sometimes, if the road is fairly level sideways then its ok, but if its slanted and you only have them on the front, your rear end will go sideways often over the bank.

Also, get the ones with the self tighteners, or use bungy cords to keep loose chain links from smacking off the side of your fenders, causing a nice looking truck to look real ugly fast.

Thanks for the input guys. I got the Laclede chains at Les Schwab here locally. I'll fit them when it dries up.

Some good advice here chaining up the front only comes with big potential problems.

I need a new high beam bulb for my truck.

They spin up the Parts-o-matic-2000 computer.

Lights flicker in the building.

Year. 2006.

Make Chevy

Model. Silverado.

On a roll now.

Motor 4.8v.

Buy some screw pin type shackles that will fit in your chains.
If you use truck type, they will aslso fit in the crossings.
They make for quick repairs to keep going and avoid damage.
If you build your own, don't make the rag ends too long.

I like to keep them tight and neat. Avoid the need for bungies,
And other issues.

This does make them harder to put on, but you will know they are on right.

Don't they have the catalogue hanging from a little wire rope leash you could look up yourself?
