Yesterday my ranger (2014 800 ) wouldn’t crank.
Pulled the battery and charged overnight.
Put load enter on it and it says it’s good.
Put back in buggy. Crank as usual.
Dash lcd says LO 10.5v. So it’s not charging?
What to check. Not real versed in trouble shooting electrical without an Alternator.
Thanks!
Dave

Is 10.5 the running voltage or crank or? In general I'll agree with WTM that battery is suspect but I can't follow the data you provided.

It’s what the lcd display on the dash says while running Not sure of that’s the running voltage or if it’s measuring the charging system. 11.8v measured at battery posts while running with voltmeter

That running voltage is too low for charging. Sometimes it requires a blip or rev of the throttle to get it charging but it sounds like your charging system isn't doing the job. I'm not familiar with that machine to say where the fault is.

Regulator more than likely. Could be the stator too, but it’s usually the voltage regulator.

Gwrench,
That’s what i was thinking. Problem with charging system.
Even riding it around with higher Rpms it’ll only get to 11.3v on the lcd.
Thanks.

Unfortunately it's a case of trying a replacement regulator to see if it works. Unless you know someone who would let you try their regulator.

A bad battery can cause a long list of problems. These machines are sensitive to specific levels of power. I would try a quality new battery first.

I’ve got another battery i can try.
The current battery is a AGM auto size battery i put in about 4-5 years ago. I ran a stick thru the oem.
The regulator is $22 on eBay. I’ll get one of those coming also.

If the battery is run down like that often it will not bounce back.
The regulator is the easiest thing ti do but the stator will take a little more time and money.
And if getting any parts make sure they are for YOUR machine because they make several but they are all not the same output.

Voltage regulator . . . . . . .the stator on that machine puts out several thousand volts, it supplies the ignition, the voltage regulator takes that and reduces it to 13.5 or so and returns it to the battery. When the VR goes out it no longer charges system, when stator goes out she won't have ignition at all. 22 bucks will fix your problem.

Thanks for all the replies.
I’ll get the VR ordered.
I’ll call the semi local Polaris dealer. Prolly want $50 for the part though.

Update:
Dealer was closed today.
Swapped batteries and it seems to work fine.
I’ll run that battery ( spare deep cycle i keep for sprayer) for a bit til i can grab another.
Charges ~12.5 @ Non idle running rpms.
I’ll keep an eye on it.
Thanks for the he,p.

Not sure of this would explain the problem you are having, but that age of Polaris UTV are known for the negative ground of the battery corroding off the frame. Something to check.

John,
Just follow the ground cable back to the frame and check the connection?
I’ve got some #2 welding lead laying around if it needs replacing.
Thanks.

Sadly its not abnormal for a battery to schit the bed in 5 years these days. Went through a similar deal with a mower. If it sits a lot a battery maintainer/charger helps so they say.

Had a similar problem with a Ranger up at the deer lease. One of the members gifted it for whatever reason? Became tired of charging the battery every other trip so I tore into it. I think you have to remove a wheel well panel - right rear - then you can get to the alternator. Belt was loose, tightened it up and has not been a problem since - 7/8 months.
Maybe worth a look?

Just checked my 2014 Ranger 800 Crew. After start-up it shows 13.2 VDC on the display at idle. Drove it around some and it seemed to fluctuate between 12.8 and 13.3 .
