Visited a local Chain sporting goods store this past weekend and spied a pretty little .243 with a fixed 4power leupold. No dings, bout 85% on the bluing and most of the case coloring on the lever is there. No cracks in the wood anywhere. They are wanting $600+/- for it. I don't know if I passed up a good selection or not.

Considering the Leupold, it wouldn't have been a horrible grab no matter what. Whether it was okay or great will depend on the model, as gd was getting to. If it was a pre-1960, you missed a great deal. If it was a 99A then it would have been okay, if it was a post-mil 99F/99DL/99E/99C/etc. then varying degrees of okay. Don't lose sleep over it unless it was a pre-1960.

+ 1 On what Rory Said With the Leupold. Make and Model will fetermine the a Price and that what Every-one Is Pointing Out. Now 600 bucks is not all that Bad considering the Scope,,and condition,,,but Pending Model it may be too Hi,,or Just about Right. Steve

What's the condition of the set up ? .... if it is minty ( not a scratch on rifle or scope ) , you may want to concider it . The choice is your's of course ..... try talking them down .

The scope's adjustment knob caps had a purplish hue. No scratches noticed. The Rifle, nice jeweling on the bolt, action was "smooth as a prom queen's thighs" and there were absolutely no dings or dents in the wood. No cracks and there was, IMO, a considerable amount of case color on the lever. I'm talking to them via email to see if I can get a walk out price below 600. I think I'd be satisfied with that. The serial # was just sent to me earlier and it was 1,023,XXX, so it was definitely post mil.

Yep, cut checkering for sure. Monte Carlo stock or no? If it is she's a DL, if not then an F.

Nice grab.............
Mike...
All said, the Savage 99 is a genius of a rifle. Although no longer produced, it remains highly revered, as it was the foundation from which Arthur Savage built one of America's great gun companies. >> (Jon Y. Wolfe) <<
