I have never heard an explaination for this, but every target has dark lead like markings around the rim of the bullet holes .
Why ?

They don't come out of the bore squeaky clean.

Same stuff that makes the first patches through the bore come out black when you clean it.

Might try a few wad cutters. They do crisp clean cuts.

Arrows leave nice clean holes. What about bbs?
Bullets must be magically lubricious.

My 300 Blackout at 1,000fps does that...........
You reckon lead scraping across paper at near 700 miles per hour would singe it??????? Or copper at over 1500MPH??

Sounds racist to me. Stop worrying about keeping the darkies away from your perfect white world.

You'd leave a dark stain somewhere if a bullet went through you too.
I'd rather die in a BAD gunfight than a GOOD nursing home.

Bullets don’t completely seal the bore. Some powder gas blows by and deposits carbon on the sides of the bullet. That’s where the smudges on the edges of the bullet holes come from. Use a felt marker to color the ogive or the sides of some bullets, fire them through a target and you can see the marker colors on the edges of the bullet holes.

Real good question. I am interested in the actual answer, whenever the collective respondents can agree upon it. Tomorrow I am going to do the "shoot-in" on a pair of just now DBC'ed barrels, one 30-06 and one .308. These are at present the cleanest barrels in the history of barrels. I'll try to notice if the first rounds leave any less of a skid mark than the later rounds, and report the results.
Cheers, Rex
