If you don't like where it is, you can erase it remotely.

If all the thief wants is the data that is easily worked around by pulling the storage before the owner has sent the erase command, something that takes a few minutes to do. If they want the machine itself the GPS hardware is also pretty quick to physically disable. It is a near certainty that those laptops were encrypted, only a complete fool doesn't encrypt his disk now that seamless full disk encryption is built into every decent OS.
